About North Lakes Eels Football Club
Origins and Founding
The North Lakes Eels Junior AFL Football Club was established in 2010 by the AFLQ, which identified a clear need for a local club to serve one of the fastest-growing corridors in South East Queensland. With a dedicated group of volunteers coming together to make it happen, the Eels played their inaugural season in 2010 fielding Under 8s and Under 9s teams - a strong start for a brand-new club. By 2011, demand had already grown enough to add a second Under 8s team. The club's history is documented on the club website.


Club History
Growth was steady throughout the club's early years. In 2017 the club's first youth team - the Under 12s - reached a final series, marking a new milestone. In 2018 the Eels fielded every junior age group for the first time and introduced two girls teams, with both the Under 13s and Under 17s reaching the Grand Final and the Under 13 Girls claiming the club's first ever premiership. The 2019 season brought the club's first Auskick program run in-house, attracting 62 participants and flowing on into three Roy's junior teams. The club's tenth anniversary in 2020 was its biggest season on record: the Kinderkick program launched, Auskick topped 65 participants, the club fielded four Under 8s teams for the first time, and light towers were installed at the oval through a government-funded grant secured by local MP Luke Howarth. Since then the Eels have continued to add silverware, with the Under 13 Girls winning the North Division 3 premiership in 2021 and the Div 4 Brisbane premiership in 2024, the latter producing the division's Best and Fairest in Adalyn Saju and Grand Final Best on Ground in Josephine Lapraix. The club honour board also recognises more than a dozen players who have surpassed 100 games for the Eels.


Home Ground
The North Lakes Eels play their home games at St Benedict's College in Mango Hill. St Benedict's College is a Catholic secondary school that opened in February 2013 and sits at 21 St Benedict's Close - a modern facility in the heart of the Mango Hill community. The shared use of the college grounds reflects the close ties between the Eels and the local school network, with many Eels players attending the schools immediately surrounding the oval.


Community and Programs
The Eels welcome boys and girls from Under 5s through to Under 15s, and the club's philosophy is built around participation, skill development, and a family-friendly environment. The club runs its own Auskick and Kinderkick programs to introduce the game to the youngest members of the community, and it actively recruits volunteer coaches and administrators every season. The mission, as stated by the club itself, is to be the junior AFL club of choice for families in the Moreton region - a community hub dedicated to educating junior players in friendship, sportsmanship, respect, and loyalty.


North Lakes and Mango Hill
North Lakes and Mango Hill are neighbouring suburbs in the City of Moreton Bay, located approximately 34 kilometres north of Brisbane's CBD. North Lakes was developed from 1999 as a master-planned community on a 1,000-hectare site led by Lend Lease, and it went on to win the UDIA Queensland Awards for Excellence's Masterplanned Development in 2010 and 2016, before taking out the Property Council of Australia's Best Master Planned Community award in 2017. The suburb recorded a population of 23,030 in the 2021 Census, reflecting the continued demand for housing in the corridor. Mango Hill, which borders North Lakes to the east and south-east, had a population of 14,921 in the same Census. Both suburbs sit within the City of Moreton Bay, one of Queensland's fastest-growing local government areas.
The Eels compete in the South East Queensland Juniors AFL competition and call St Benedict's College, Mango Hill their home ground.
