About Port Melbourne Colts
Origins and Founding
The Port Melbourne Colts Football and Netball Club was founded in 1957 by three men - Alex James, Brian "Moppa" McBroom and John Berti - along with a group of young footballers from Port Melbourne who had been playing in the YCW under-18 competition and wanted to stay together after turning 18. The club's first season was played as Middle Park Colts, but as almost every player came from Port Melbourne, the name was changed to Port Colts in 1958. The club is affectionately known as "The Stable." In 2016, the Port Colts joined the Southern Football League (now the SNFL), where they have competed in Division 1 ever since.
Club History
The Port Colts have claimed 15 senior premierships since 1957, making them one of the more successful clubs in Melbourne's inner-suburban amateur competition. Early flags came in 1960 while in the Sunday competition, and the club entered a prolific period through the 1970s, winning five premierships in six seasons: 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975. Further titles followed in 1979, 1981, 1985, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006 and 2016. The club spent many years in the Western Region Football League (formerly the Western Suburban League and Footscray District League) before returning to the Southern League in 2016. The Port Colts started with a single senior men's team, added a reserves in 1972, and commenced junior football in 1975. Senior Netball joined the club in 2021, and the club now fields teams for both men and women across junior and senior grades.
Home Ground
The Port Colts are based at JL Murphy Reserve in Port Melbourne. The club originally played at The Lagoon Oval in Graham Street before relocating to Murphy Reserve in the late 1960s. JL Murphy Reserve sits in the heart of the Port Melbourne community and provides playing fields and club facilities for senior, women's, and junior teams.
Community and Programs
The Port Melbourne Colts run a comprehensive range of programs from Auskick level through to senior football for both men and women, along with a senior netball program that joined the club in 2021. The junior program, which commenced in 1975, now fields teams from under-10s through to under-18s. The club's strong community identity is reflected in its longevity - having operated continuously for nearly seven decades and maintaining deep connections with the Port Melbourne and inner-south Melbourne communities.
Port Melbourne
Port Melbourne is an inner suburb of Melbourne, located approximately 4 kilometres south of the CBD on the shore of Port Phillip Bay. Historically one of Melbourne's working-class harbour communities, Port Melbourne has transformed significantly since the 1990s into a desirable residential area while retaining a strong community identity. The suburb is home to Station Pier, the former passenger terminal for international and interstate shipping, and is known for its cafes, beach foreshore, and walkable residential streets. The Sandridge Beach and Lagoon area, which includes the foreshore near Graham Street where the Colts originally played, remains a popular community space.
The Port Colts compete in the Southern Football League and call JL Murphy Reserve home. More information is available at portmelbournecolts.com.au, and the club can be followed on Facebook and Instagram.

💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
