About Frankston Dolphins Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Frankston Football Club, nicknamed the Dolphins, is one of Victoria's oldest football clubs, founded in 1887 - making 2026 the club's 139th year of existence. According to the club's history on Wikipedia, Frankston was the first Peninsula-based football club to be founded and began organising games with other Peninsula clubs including Hastings and Mornington from the very early years. The club was a foundation member of the Peninsula Football Association (PFA) when it formed in 1908, and went on to win five PFA premierships (1911, 1919, 1922, 1923, and 1931). When the PFA merged with the Peninsula District Football Association in 1934 to form the Mornington Peninsula Football League (MPFL), Frankston continued its premiership success, claiming seven MPFL flags in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1949, 1952, and 1961.

Club History
In 1966, Frankston made the bold move into the second division of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), becoming the first Peninsula club to enter state football. Their breakthrough VFA season came in 1976 when the senior side finished top of the Division 2 ladder (though fell short in finals). In 1978, the Dolphins claimed their first VFA premiership, defeating Camberwell 15.13 (103) to 13.11 (89) in front of a crowd of 12,291 at Toorak Park, with full-forward John Hunter booting six goals in the 14-point win. Promotion to Division 1 followed, and the club went on to claim VFA/VFL Reserves titles in 1989, 1992, and 1997.
The mid-1990s were a golden era for the Dolphins. Under former Carlton premiership player David Rhys-Jones, Frankston reached back-to-back VFL Grand Finals in 1996 and 1997, and won the Minor Premiership in both seasons. The club also won the J.J. Liston Trophy - the VFL's best and fairest award - in 1984 through Peter Geddes, in 1999 through John Georgiou, and in 2006 through Aaron Edwards. Notable AFL draftees from the Dolphins include Matthew Boyd (Western Bulldogs, 2001), Michael Hibberd (Essendon, 2010), Sam Lloyd (Richmond, 2013), and Nic Newman (Sydney Swans, 2014). In 2016 the club faced financial crisis and entered voluntary administration, with its VFL licence suspended. After a remarkable recovery, the Dolphins returned to the VFL in 2018 and by 2025 hosted their first home final since 2008, achieving their best season since 1997. The women's program also hit a milestone in 2024, winning the MPFNL Women's Division 3 premiership.

Home Ground
The Dolphins play their home games at Frankston Park, a ground with a capacity of 5,000 and a fully licensed social club overlooking the oval. Frankston Park suffered a major setback on 13 February 2008 when the historic grandstand - named after club stalwart Bryan Mace and dating back to the early 1930s - was destroyed by fire, with damage estimated at over $1 million. The grandstand was rebuilt by late 2010. In 2015, the club expanded the social rooms and function centre to seat 370 patrons downstairs and a further 220 upstairs, with funding from the Victorian State Government, AFL, AFL Victoria, and Frankston City Council.

Community and Programs
The Frankston Football Club runs both a senior men's VFL program and a senior women's team in Division 1 of the Mornington Peninsula Football Netball League (MPFNL). The club also operates the Graham Community Dolphins program, a community inclusion initiative that provides people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in football. The club's junior development program has produced a steady stream of AFL-calibre talent over the decades.

Frankston is a city and major regional centre on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay in the City of Frankston, approximately 43 kilometres south-east of Melbourne's central business district. Anchoring the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston serves as the main commercial and service hub for the wider Peninsula region. The city has a population of over 130,000 and is well connected to Melbourne via train and road, making it an important gateway between the outer suburbs and the Peninsula's tourist towns further south.
