About Corrimal Cougars Rugby League Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Corrimal Cougars Rugby League Football Club was established in 1912, with the club's founding deeply rooted in the working-class mining communities of the Illawarra region. Local miners were instrumental in getting the club off the ground, and the Cougars have competed in the Illawarra Rugby League - one of Australia's oldest rugby league competitions - since that founding year. The club's name "Cougars" was chosen through a competition run among local school children, with Robyn Fletcher of East Corrimal Public School winning the honour. The inscription "Est. 1912" appears under the club's cougar emblem to this day.
Club History
The Cougars have won two First Grade Premierships - in 1948 and 1974. The 1948 premiership was achieved from fifth place on the ladder, with the club winning the Grand Final 22-7 over Port Kembla. The 1974 premiership - led by New Zealand Test prop Oscar Danielson as captain-coach - drew an estimated crowd of 15,000 to the Grand Final, which the Cougars won 22-8 over Wollongong. That era also produced Reserve Grade premierships in 1971, 1973, and 1975, and Third Grade titles in 1971, 1974, and 1978. The Women's side has added further silverware, winning the Illawarra Rugby League Women's Premiership in 2015, 2017, and 2019. According to Wikipedia, the Cougars have also won five Second Grade, six Third Grade, and one Fourth Grade Illawarra premiership across their history.
The club has produced several players who went on to NRL, State of Origin, and international level - including Tyson Frizell (St. George Illawarra Dragons, Newcastle Knights, NSW and Australian representative), Col Donohoe (Eastern Suburbs, South Sydney, NSW and Australian representative), Craig Young (St. George, NSW and Australian representative), Ben Hornby (St. George Illawarra), and Luke Patten (Illawarra Steelers, St. George Illawarra, Canterbury Bulldogs).
Home Ground
Ziems Park in Corrimal has been the Cougars' home since it was officially opened on 14 April 1934, the day Corrimal defeated Thirroul 5-0 for the Grant Cup. The ground is named after the Ziems family, who originally used the land as an abattoir before donating it to the rugby league club in the early 1930s on the condition it be fenced and used for rugby league. In 1970, the ground underwent major improvements - including terracing of the embankments around the main oval - with assistance from South Bulli Mine's community relations project, making Ziems Park one of the best grounds in the Illawarra district.
Community and Programs
The Cougars field men's, women's, and junior teams in the Illawarra Rugby League competition each season. The club's community roots - stretching back to the mining families of early 20th century Corrimal - remain central to its identity more than 110 years on. In 2003, the club honoured its own history by naming an official Corrimal Legends Team, recognising 13 of the greatest players to represent the club. The Corrimal Cougars Junior Rugby League Football Club operates alongside the senior club, providing development pathways for young players across the northern Wollongong suburbs.
Corrimal, New South Wales
Corrimal is a northern suburb of Wollongong in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, located approximately 75 kilometres south of Sydney. The area developed substantially during the coal-mining era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and that working-class industrial heritage is closely tied to the Cougars' origins. Today, Corrimal is a vibrant residential suburb within the City of Wollongong local government area, situated between the Illawarra Escarpment to the west and the Pacific coastline to the east.
The Cougars compete in the Illawarra Rugby League and call Ziems Park, Corrimal home. Follow the Cougars on Facebook for fixtures, results, and club news, and follow them on Instagram for match-day photos and highlights.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
