About Salisbury Football Club

Origins and Founding

The Salisbury Football Club, nicknamed the Magpies, has roots stretching back to the 1870s, when football was first played in the Salisbury district of South Australia. The first recorded official match was played on 30 July 1880 against Gawler Albions, making Salisbury one of the oldest continuously operating football clubs in South Australia. In 1911 the club formally joined the Gawler Football Association, which had been founded in 1889.

The club's early years were characterised by challenges in securing a permanent ground, with drainage and suitable facilities hard to establish. The first guernseys were made from old wheat sacks with black stripes sewn on - a humble beginning for a club that would go on to win premierships across multiple leagues. A pavilion was built at Salisbury Oval in 1913, which has been the club's home ever since.

Club History

The Salisbury Football Club has competed across numerous associations and leagues throughout its 145-plus-year history. The club's first premiership came in 1937 in the Lower North Football Association, beating Virginia in the grand final at Smithfield Oval. After a return to the Gawler and Districts Football League, the Magpies won back-to-back premierships in 1956 and 1957.

In 1961 the club entered the newly formed Central Districts Football Association alongside Central District, Elizabeth, Elizabeth North, Salisbury North and Two Wells-Virginia. The club achieved its finest era during this period, winning four consecutive premierships from 1968 to 1971. The club also celebrated its centenary in 1980. The league became the Northern Metropolitan Football League in the 1980s, and the Magpies added three more flags in 1984, 1986 and 1988. The NMFL disbanded in 1994 and the club moved to the South Australian Amateur Football League (renamed the Adelaide Footy League in 2017), winning further premierships in 1997, 2001 and 2007. The B-Grade side won back-to-back flags in 2016.

Salisbury has produced a number of AFL and AFLW players, including Stuart Dew (Port Adelaide, Hawthorn), Anthony Ingerson (Adelaide, Melbourne), Scott Bamford (Geelong), Ben Nason (Richmond), Sean Lemmens (Gold Coast Suns) and Sarah Allen (Adelaide Crows).

Home Ground

The Magpies play their home games at Salisbury Oval in the suburb of Salisbury, in Adelaide's northern suburbs. Salisbury Oval has been the club's base since the pavilion was constructed there in 1913. The ground sits centrally within the club's community catchment and hosts both senior and junior competitions throughout the Adelaide Footy League season.

Community and Programs

Salisbury FC maintains a strong junior football program through the Salisbury Junior Football Club, which was established alongside the senior club to develop young players from across the Salisbury district. The club motto - "Proud of the past, confident of the future" - reflects its long-standing commitment to community participation. The club holds the unofficial club song "Cheer boys cheer, we are the Salisburyites" and maintains a proud identity in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.

Salisbury

Salisbury is a suburb and major activity centre in Adelaide's northern suburbs, located approximately 23 kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD. The City of Salisbury is one of the most populous local government areas in South Australia, with a diverse and rapidly growing community. The area has seen significant population growth and urban development since the post-World War II era, during which Salisbury Football Club has continued to serve as a sporting and community anchor for the district.

The Magpies compete in the Adelaide Footy League and call Salisbury Oval home. Visit the club website for more information and follow them on Facebook for news and match day updates.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
