Team Banners for Group Celebrations
Celebrating a big season with a group of 3 to 6 players? Our Team Banner is the perfect choice for the Vikings. Lead off with a message like "Altona Vikings - Respect All, Fear None" and let your squad run through together for a moment nobody will forget.

About Altona Vikings Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Altona Football Club was established in 1918 following a meeting in a Pier Street cafe in the suburb of Altona, organised by local businesspeople James Duke, Dick Blomberg, and others. The earliest home grounds were roughly marked-out paddocks - including a site near the corner of Civic Parade and Millers Road in Seaholme, Rowdens Paddock at Cherry Lake, and a paddock known as "The Mine Paddock" near Harrington Square. The club competed across several competitions in its early decades, including the YMCA Competition (1921-1928), the Melbourne and Suburbs Football Association (1926), and the Victorian Football Association Sub-Districts before settling into the Werribee District Football Association in 1930, where it won premierships in 1930 and 1932. The original nickname in the 1930s was "The Sea Dogs".
Club History
According to the Wikipedia article on Altona Football Club and the club's own records, the Vikings have accumulated 19 senior premierships across their history. After returning from wartime recess, Altona won the Footscray District Football League (FDFL) B Grade in 1947 under former Hawthorn player Gordon Timmins, going through the season undefeated. Further premierships followed in the Werribee Football League in 1956 and 1964. In 1969 a restructured club - Altona City Football Club - was formed and entered the Western Suburbs Football League (WSFL), adopting the nickname "The Vikings" in 1972. This era produced six premierships in seven years: 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1976. At the AGM of 4 October 1992 it was resolved to rename the club back to Altona Football Club and to amalgamate all records from both eras. Further Division 1 premierships followed in 2012 and 2022 in what is now known as the Western Region Football League / WFNL. The club has also produced several VFL and AFL players, including Stuart Magee (South Melbourne and Footscray, 216 games), Jayden Post (Richmond, 30 games from 2009 to 2012), and Saad El-Hawli, who was listed by Essendon in 2025. From the junior club, Trent McKenzie played 128 games for the Gold Coast Suns from 2011 to 2017 before joining Port Adelaide, and Emerson Jeka played for Hawthorn from 2020 to 2023 before moving to Geelong in 2024.
Home Ground
The Vikings play at Simonds Oval within JK Grant Reserve, Sugargum Drive, Altona VIC 3018. The reserve is named after John K. Grant, a patron of the Altona Hockey Club which also uses the precinct. Hobsons Bay City Council manages the reserve, which sits adjacent to Cherry Lake and has been the club's home precinct for many decades. JK Grant Reserve was also the backdrop for a significant local milestone - the proclamation of the City of Altona in 1968.
Community and Programs
Altona Football Club fields senior men's and senior women's teams alongside its Reserves and Under 19 sides in the WFNL. The club works closely with the Altona Junior Football Club, which operates separately but shares the same ground, same theme song, and the same proud Viking identity. The Vikings have a long tradition of producing league best-and-fairest winners, with players such as Steve Mandics (5 club B&Fs), Andrew Venner (4, including two WFNL League B&Fs in 1998 and 1999), and Greg Cunningham (5 club B&Fs) standing out across the club's history. The club's community spirit is also recognised through its annual Ron James Memorial Award for Club Person of the Year, presented since 1990.
Altona
Altona is a residential and coastal suburb 13 km south-west of central Melbourne, situated on Altona Bay on Port Phillip Bay within the City of Hobsons Bay. The suburb was proclaimed a separate shire in 1957 and a city in 1968, before amalgamation into Hobsons Bay City Council in 1994. The suburb grew rapidly in the postwar decades, shaped by British and European migration and a strong industrial sector. Its population reached approximately 9,900 at the 2011 census. Altona is known for its beachfront esplanade, the Cherry Lake conservation reserve, and a community described by former Prime Minister Julia Gillard - who lived in the suburb during her federal parliamentary career - as having a distinctive "village feel".
The Vikings compete in the Western Football Netball League (WFNL) Division 1 and call Simonds Oval at JK Grant Reserve, Sugargum Drive, Altona home. Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
