About Thuringowa Bulldogs Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Thuringowa Bulldogs Australian Football Club (known as the "Towns Bulldogs" or "Doggies") was founded in 1970 under the name West Townsville Football Club. The club competed as West Townsville in the AFL Townsville competition from 1970 until 2001, when it was renamed the Thuringowa Bulldogs to reflect the club's connection to the former City of Thuringowa. Based at Riverway Oval in Kirwan, the Bulldogs are now one of Townsville's largest and most successful football clubs, fielding teams across juniors, seniors, women's and youth girls competitions.


Club History
The Thuringowa Bulldogs have an extraordinary premiership record in AFL Townsville, winning 15 senior flags across their history: 1971, 1980, 1987-88, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The club went back-to-back in 2010 and 2011, then recorded a historic 2023 season when both the senior men's and reserve men's sides claimed premierships, with the reserves claiming a three-peat in 2023. The Bulldogs' senior men claimed further premierships in 2024 and 2025, making them one of the most dominant clubs in the modern AFL Townsville era. The club nominates teams in every grade played in the AFL Townsville competition.


Home Ground
The Thuringowa Bulldogs play their home games at Riverway Oval (part of the Riverway Stadium precinct) in Kirwan, Townsville. Riverway Stadium is a premier sports facility in North Queensland and serves as one of the best grounds outside of Brisbane according to the club. The ground accommodates the Bulldogs' full program of AFL Townsville senior, reserves, women's, youth and junior football across the season.


Community and Programs
The Thuringowa Bulldogs field men's senior and reserves sides, women's senior teams, youth girls teams, and junior football at all age levels. The club is committed to being a family-oriented sporting environment that welcomes players at all levels of experience. The Bulldogs have over 2,100 Facebook followers and approximately 400 Instagram followers under @tbafc, and maintain an active online presence throughout the AFL Townsville season. All are welcome to join "the Kennel."


Kirwan and Thuringowa, Townsville
Kirwan is one of Townsville's largest suburbs, located approximately 10 to 11 kilometres south-west of the Townsville CBD in Queensland. The suburb has a population of approximately 20,780 residents and is a family-friendly residential hub with green spaces, shopping centres and the Riverway precinct. Kirwan was formerly part of the City of Thuringowa (which merged with the City of Townsville in 2008), explaining the club's name. Townsville is Queensland's largest city north of Brisbane, located approximately 1,350 kilometres north of the state capital.
