About Kalamunda Tigers Junior Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Kalamunda and Districts Junior Football Club (KDJFC) was established in 1952, making it one of the longest-running junior Australian Rules football clubs in Western Australia. Founded to bring the game to the Perth Hills community, the club has grown continuously from its early roots in the Kalamunda township to serve a wide catchment spanning Forrestfield, Gooseberry Hill, High Wycombe, Maida Vale, Pickering Brook, and Wattle Grove.
In 2022 the club celebrated its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of junior football development in the hills east of Perth. KDJFC operates as a not-for-profit organisation, run entirely by volunteers who dedicate their time to creating a positive environment for young players.
Club History
From its founding in 1952, KDJFC has built a proud tradition of producing players who progress through to WAFL and AFL level. The club's Life Players program, established in 2012, recognises young players who demonstrate exceptional commitment and leadership. Among the club's most prominent alumni is Denver Grainger-Barras, who earned his KDJFC Life Player honour in 2019 before being drafted to the Hawthorn Football Club in the 2020 AFL National Draft. Grainger-Barras debuted for Hawthorn in 2021, having developed his early skills at Kalamunda.
Life memberships at KDJFC stretch back to 1959, with founding contributors such as Ernie Riley recognised for their early work in building the club's foundations. The club today fields teams across all age groups from Pre-Primary through to Year 12, catering for both male and female participants across its various competitions.
Home Ground
KDJFC plays its home matches at Kostera Oval, located at 3 Recreation Road, Kalamunda WA 6076. The ground is named in recognition of the Kostera family's long association with junior football in the district - a founding life member of the club, Jack Kostera, was honoured in 1961. The Auskick centre also operates from Kostera Oval, providing a central hub for all levels of the club's junior programs throughout the season from April to September.
Community and Programs
KDJFC runs a highly regarded NAB AFL Auskick program for boys and girls from Pre-Primary through to Year 2, providing a first experience of Australian football in a fun and safe environment. The club's programs extend through Mods (Years 3-6) and Youth competitions (Years 7-12), with separate male and female pathways available at each age group. With more than 500 active registered players, the club is one of the largest junior football clubs in the Perth Hills region.
The club places a strong emphasis on participation, fun, and friendship as its core values, and has developed partnerships with local schools across the Kalamunda district to introduce the game to new participants each year. KDJFC is a proud community organisation that has engaged thousands of families across its 70-plus-year history.
Kalamunda
Kalamunda takes its name from the Noongar Aboriginal words "cala" (home) and "munnda" (forest), meaning "a home in the forest." Located in the Perth Hills approximately 24 kilometres east of the Perth CBD, Kalamunda is the administrative centre of the City of Kalamunda, which had a usual resident population of 58,762 at the 2021 census. The area is known for its bushland, orchards, and tourism, with the heritage-listed Kalamunda town centre and national parks attracting visitors from across the metropolitan area.
The Tigers compete in AFL competitions across the Perth Hills region and call Kostera Oval in Kalamunda home. Visit the club website for more information and follow them on Facebook for news and match day updates.

-
-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
