About Belgrave Junior Magpies
Origins and Founding
The Belgrave Junior Football Club was established as a stand-alone entity in 1972, having previously operated under the umbrella of the Belgrave Football Club which was founded in 1909. The junior club's formal separation allowed it to develop its own committee, programs, and identity while retaining the iconic Magpies name that has been associated with Belgrave football for over a century. The club competes in the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL) junior competition, fielding teams across multiple age groups from the Belgrave area in the Dandenong Ranges foothills east of Melbourne.
Club History
The Belgrave Junior Football Club provides the grassroots pathway for the senior Belgrave Football Netball Club, which has a decorated history stretching back to 1909. The senior club's golden era saw them dominate the Mountain District Football Association, winning six consecutive grand finals from 1948 to 1954. In the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League (YVMDFL), the Magpies claimed Division 1 premierships in 1975 and 1976 and a Division 2 premiership in 1999, before winning again in 2012 and 2017. The senior club is now based in the Outer East Football Netball League. The junior club has served as the first step for generations of Belgrave footballers, helping maintain the club's presence in its home community. Notable alumni who passed through the Belgrave pathway include AFL players Darren Crocker (North Melbourne) and Leigh Osborne (Gold Coast Suns).
Home Ground
The Belgrave Junior Magpies are based at Belgrave Recreation Reserve on Pepi Road in Belgrave, which has long been the home of Belgrave football. The ground is nestled in the Dandenong Ranges foothills and serves both the junior and senior clubs, providing a community hub for the broader Belgrave area. The senior club undertook significant renovation works to the ground in 2010, upgrading facilities for players and supporters.
Community and Programs
The Belgrave Junior Football Club runs Auskick and age-group junior programs, serving families from across the Belgrave township and surrounding areas including Belgrave Heights, Belgrave South, and Menzies Creek. The club is a key community anchor for the Dandenong Ranges, providing youth sport opportunities in an area defined by its natural environment, tourism character, and tight-knit community identity. The Magpies juniors share facilities with the senior club and maintain a strong link between the generations of Belgrave footballers.
Belgrave
Belgrave is a town and outer suburb of Melbourne, located 36 kilometres east of the CBD within the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The town recorded a population of 3,894 at the 2021 census. Situated in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, Belgrave is best known as the southern terminus of Puffing Billy Railway, the historic narrow-gauge steam train that runs through the Dandenong Ranges. -
-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
