About South Mandurah Junior Football Club
Origins and Founding
The first junior football team from the area, an Under 10 side wearing West Perth colours under coach Kim Knox, was formed in 1980 as part of the South Mandurah Sports Association. The South Mandurah Junior Football Club itself was established in 1984 to promote junior football for the area south of the old Mandurah Bridge, covering Halls Head, Novara, Miami, Falcon, Avalon, Florida, Melros, Dawesville and Parkridge, with Ron Melbourne serving as the club’s first president for seven years.
 
Club History
By 1986 the club fielded four grades, and its Under 14s reached the club’s first Grand Final. The club adopted its West Coast Eagles-style jumper in 1989 and had grown to 18 sides by 1998, before splitting into South Mandurah Junior and Halls Head Junior Football Clubs in 1999. The club introduced its first all-female teams in 2014 and had rebuilt to 18 sides once again, with one group of girls winning three consecutive premierships in 2020, 2021 and 2022 under coach Daniel Bandy. In 2021 the club introduced the Levi McCulloch Award, honouring a trailblazer of female AFL development in the Peel region who played all of her junior football at the club, as detailed on the club’s own history page. In 2023 club member Daniel McHenry designed the club’s first First Nations jersey, reflecting the club’s motto of unity across one club and one community.
 
Home Ground
South Mandurah plays out of three home venues known as the nests, at Falcon, Wannanup and Dawesville, with Falcon Reserve on Lynda Street in Falcon serving as a principal venue for the club.
 
Community and Programs
The club fields male, female and mixed teams from Pre-Primary through to Year 12, running a community-based AFL program covering Auskick, junior and youth football across Falcon, Wannanup, Dawesville and the surrounding suburbs.
 
Falcon
Falcon is a southern suburb of Mandurah in Western Australia’s Peel region, within the City of Mandurah, with a population of 5,531 recorded at the 2021 census. Originally known as Miami, the suburb was renamed after Falcon Bay in 1967, though the earlier name lives on in local landmarks such as the Miami Plaza Shopping Centre.
