About Coburg Football Club
Origins and Founding
Coburg Football Club was formed in 1891 and spent its early years in the Melbourne District Football Association, winning premierships in 1913, 1914 and 1920 before its strong form saw it promoted to the Victorian Football League reserves from 1921 to 1924. The club was admitted as a senior club in the Victorian Football Association in 1925, a response to Footscray, North Melbourne and Hawthorn all departing for the VFL that year.
 
Club History
The Lions made an immediate impact in the VFA, winning three consecutive premierships from 1926 to 1928, though these remained the club’s only top-flight flags for more than fifty years. Prolific goalkickers Lance Collins and Bob Pratt starred through the 1930s and 1940s, with Pratt’s 183 goals in the 1941 season standing as a VFA record at the time. The club endured a genuine threat to its existence in 1965 when the local council leased its home ground to North Melbourne, but dissenting members kept Coburg operating independently until it returned to its own ground in 1966. A revival from 1978 to 1990 brought further premierships in 1979, 1988 and 1989, with VFA great Phil Cleary involved as either player or coach throughout. The club later spent 1999 and 2000 partnered with Fitzroy as the Coburg-Fitzroy Lions, and from 2001 to 2013 played as the Coburg Tigers under an alignment with Richmond, before reverting to the Lions name from 2014 onwards, as detailed on Wikipedia.
 
Home Ground
Coburg has played out of Barry Plant Park, formerly known as Coburg City Oval, on the corner of Russell and Harding Streets since 1915, with the ground now holding a capacity of 15,000.
 
Community and Programs
Coburg fields a men’s team in the Victorian Football League, has fielded a women’s team in the VAFA Women’s competition, runs a team in the FIDA Football League for players with intellectual disabilities, and supports junior teams through the Essendon District Football League.

Coburg is a suburb about 8 kilometres north of the Melbourne CBD in the City of Merri-bek, with a population of 26,574 recorded at the 2021 census. One of Melbourne’s older inner-northern suburbs, Coburg has been home to the football club for the whole of its 135-year history.
