About Imperial Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Imperial Football Club, known to locals as the Imps, was formed in 1931 when the Murray Bridge Rovers split into two separate clubs, with the Rambler Football Club emerging as its long-time rival on the other side of town. For 35 years the two clubs shared the same oval before Imperial moved to its own ground in 1966, the site now known as Johnstone Park.
 
Club History
Imperial has gone on to become the most successful club in River Murray Football League history, winning 22 premierships since 1931, most recently in 2022, 2018, 2011 and 2009, as recorded on the club’s honour roll. Tyson Wait won the club’s Mail Medal in 2009, 2011 and 2013, while Norm Weibrecht claimed the award four times through the 1940s. The club has also produced AFL talent, with Chad Wingard playing in Imperial’s 2009 premiership team at age 16 before starting a long career with Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, while Martin Mattner went on to play for the Adelaide Crows and Sydney Swans.
 
Home Ground
Imperial has been based at Johnstone Park on Adelaide Road in Murray Bridge since 1966, when the club left the oval it had shared with Rambler for over three decades to build its own clubrooms and ground. Johnstone Park remains home to Imperial’s senior, junior and netball teams today.
 
Community and Programs
Alongside its senior sides, Imperial fields junior teams through the RMFL junior competition and is affiliated with the Imperial Netball Club, giving families a home across football and netball each season. The club describes itself as a family friendly, community orientated club and runs registration for new players and members each year.
 
Murray Bridge
Murray Bridge is a city on the Murray River about 78 kilometres southeast of Adelaide, with a population of just over 17,000 recorded at the 2021 census. Known to the Ngarrindjeri people as Pomberuk, the town took its current name in 1924 after the road and rail bridge crossing the river, and today serves as the commercial centre of the Rural City of Murray Bridge.
