About Maffra Eagles
Origins and Founding
Australian rules football has been played in Maffra since at least 1877, and the Maffra Football Club was formally established in 1883, making it one of the oldest sporting institutions in the Gippsland region. In its early decades the club competed in the Gippsland Football Association and the original Gippsland Football League. Known today as the Maffra Eagles, the club fields both football and netball teams under the banner of the Maffra Football Netball Club.

Club History
Maffra was a force in the first half of the twentieth century, winning Gippsland Football League senior premierships in 1921, 1926, 1935, 1938, 1946 and 1948. The club joined the La Trobe Valley Football League in 1960 and, after later realignments, now competes in the Gippsland League. Following a long drought, the Eagles surged back to the top of the competition with senior flags in 2002, 2003 and 2004, again in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010, and further senior premierships in 2016 and 2019. Maffra has produced a steady stream of players who reached the elite level, including John Butcher, taken by Port Adelaide with pick 8 in the 2009 AFL National Draft, Sam Berry, drafted by Adelaide in 2020, and Ben Robbins, recruited in the 1993 draft who went on to play with West Coast, Brisbane and North Melbourne.

Home Ground
The Eagles play their home matches at the Maffra Recreation Reserve on Gibney Street, a multi-purpose sporting precinct in the heart of the town that also hosts cricket and other community sport. The reserve has long been the focal point of local sport in Maffra and remains the home base for the club's football and netball programs.

Community and Programs
Beyond the senior sides, the Maffra Football Netball Club runs reserves and junior football teams alongside a full netball program across senior and junior grades, giving local children a clear pathway from junior sport into senior competition. Run almost entirely by volunteers, the club is a central gathering point for families across Maffra and the surrounding farming districts through the winter season.

Maffra
Maffra is a regional service town in the Shire of Wellington, sitting on the Macalister River in central Gippsland about 220 kilometres east of Melbourne and 17 kilometres north-west of Sale. Home to a population of around 4,300 at the 2016 census, the town lies at the centre of a rich dairy farming district and was historically the only beet sugar processing centre in Australia, a heritage preserved today at the local Beet Museum. With its schools, shops and deep agricultural roots, Maffra remains a close-knit country town where the football netball club is a source of considerable local pride.
