About Lake Macquarie Dockers
Origins and Founding
Lake Macquarie's Australian football history began in 1997, when the club was founded as the Macquarie Magpies and started out at Tulkaba Park in Teralba. After two seasons in the old Newcastle Australian Football League, the Magpies stood down for a year in 1999 before returning in 2000.
That comeback came as a foundation club of the new Black Diamond Australian Football League, playing under an Adelaide Crows affiliation as the Lake Macquarie Crows. A partnership with the Fremantle Football Club in 2011 gave the club its current name and identity as the Lake Macquarie Dockers.

Club History
The Crows climbed into First Grade in 2008, and the league itself became AFL Hunter Central Coast in 2019 after 18 years as the Black Diamond Australian Football League. Its senior trophy, the Black Diamond Cup, has been contested in the Hunter region since 1888, making it one of the oldest sporting trophies still played for in Australia.
The Fremantle connection has opened doors for Lake Macquarie's junior footballers, both boys and girls. In September 2025, junior Alexander Farrell was selected for the Toyota AFL Indigenous and Multicultural Academy in Melbourne, one of the AFL's key talent pathways. Months earlier, in March 2025, a 56-strong touring party from the club, including a 21-player squad, made the trip to Perth for a curtain-raiser alongside Fremantle, the club's first visit to WA in six years.

Home Ground
The club has trained and played out of Tulkaba Park on York Street, Teralba, since 1997. Senior women's, senior men's and junior sides all train there on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, making the ground the hub of Dockers activity throughout the season.

Community and Programs
Female participation has grown steadily at the club, with a senior women's team training alongside the men each week and junior girls welcomed into the broader junior program at Tulkaba Park. The Dockers describe themselves on social media as a club where "all ages, any ability" have been welcome since 1997, an ethos that underpins the pathway from junior girls' football through to senior women's football.

Teralba
Teralba sits on the northern shore of Lake Macquarie within the City of Lake Macquarie, part of Greater Newcastle and about 22 kilometres west-south-west of the city centre. First established in 1831 and linked to the rail network in the 1880s, the suburb recorded a population of 2,652 at the 2021 census and lies between Speers Point and Booragul on the lake's edge.
