About Belgrave Magpies

Origins and Founding

The Belgrave Football Club was founded in 1909 in the Evelyn Football Association (EFA), making it one of the earliest clubs established in Melbourne's eastern hill country. The Magpies claimed their first EFA premiership in 1911. The club later competed in the Scoresby District Football Association before joining the Mountain District Football Association in 1945. Netball was formally added to the club in 2006, creating the Belgrave Football Netball Club as it is known today.

Club History

The golden era of Belgrave football came in the late 1940s and early 1950s when the Magpies won an extraordinary six Mountain District Football Association premierships between 1948 and 1954 (1948, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954). The club joined the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League (YVMDFL) in 1966 as a founding member, winning back-to-back Division 1 premierships in 1975 and 1976. After periods in Division 2, the Magpies reclaimed a Division 2 premiership in 1999 and again in 2012, the 2012 grand final seeing a dominant win over Yarra Glen. The club also won Division 2 in 2017 through a remarkable comeback, overturning an 11-goal half-time deficit. With the YVMDFL merging with the SFL to form the Outer East Football Netball League, Belgrave now competes in Division 1 of that competition. Notable AFL alumni include Darren Crocker (North Melbourne) and Leigh Osborne (Gold Coast Suns).

Home Ground

The Magpies play at Belgrave Recreation Reserve on Pepi Road in Belgrave, which has served as the home of Belgrave football throughout the club's history. The ground was subject to significant renovation in 2010 as part of the club's rebuilding phase. It is the shared home of both the senior and junior Magpies programs, sitting at the gateway to the Dandenong Ranges foothills.

Community and Programs

The Belgrave Football Netball Club runs senior men's, reserves, and under-18s football teams as well as netball teams in the Outer East competition. The junior feeder club, the Belgrave Junior Football Club (established independently in 1972), operates in parallel, providing a youth pathway. The club is a central social institution in Belgrave, hosting community events and serving as a meeting point for families across the Dandenong Ranges corridor.

Belgrave

Belgrave is a town and outer suburb of Melbourne located 36 kilometres east of the CBD within the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The town recorded a population of 3,894 at the 2021 census. Situated in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges on the lands of the Wurundjeri people, Belgrave is best known as the southern terminus of the Puffing Billy Railway, a beloved heritage steam train that winds through the ranges. The area draws visitors for bushwalking, cycling, and tourism, with easy access to the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    • Eco-friendly & Recyclable: All banners are fully recyclable when the celebration is over.

    • Durable weatherproof sports banners printed on heavy-duty coated paper - these banners are not made of crepe paper.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
