About Dandenong West Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Dandenong West Football Netball Club was founded in December 1963, initially operating as the Dandenong West Junior Football Club and fielding junior boys teams across various age groups. The club was established to serve the Dandenong West community in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, providing a local football pathway for young players in one of Melbourne's most multicultural outer areas. After two decades building its junior base, the club entered senior competition for the first time in 1984 in the South East Suburban Football League (SESFL).
Club History
After the SESFL years, the Dandenong West club moved to the Eastern Suburban Churches Football Association (ESCFA) in 1987, before the Southern Football League (SFL, now SFNL) absorbed the ESCFA in 1993, bringing the club into the SFL family. The club finished sixth in Division 3 in its inaugural SFL season. In 2004 the club rebranded to the Dandenong Demons, and in 2008 adopted the Redlegs nickname - a name previously held by the original Dandenong Football Club that competed in the Victorian Football Association from 1958 to 1994. In 2015 the club added netball for the first time, winning the Division 6 grand final in its very first season of competition. On 27 July 2023 the club announced it would return to the Dandenong West name for the 2024 season, with new logos and colours revealed in December 2023. The club now competes in Division 4 of the SFNL. Notable alumni include Ricky Jackson, who played VFL/AFL football with Melbourne, and Mick Reid, who played 500 senior games for the club.
Home Ground
The Westerners are based in Dandenong West, a suburb in Melbourne's south-eastern growth corridor within the City of Greater Dandenong. The club plays home matches within the SFNL competition structure across facilities in the local government area. The club's website and social media channels provide current fixture and ground information for each season.
Community and Programs
Dandenong West Football Netball Club operates both Australian rules football and netball programs under the one banner, having added netball in 2015. The club serves one of Melbourne's most diverse communities, with the City of Greater Dandenong consistently recording the highest rate of residents born overseas of any local government area in Victoria. Community sport at the club provides a shared space for people from many different cultural backgrounds to connect through participation in Australian sport.
Dandenong West
Dandenong West is a suburb in the City of Greater Dandenong, located approximately 35 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD. The broader Dandenong area is one of Melbourne's major south-eastern employment and retail hubs, anchored by Dandenong Central and served by a major train line. Greater Dandenong has one of Australia's most culturally diverse populations, with residents tracing roots to more than 150 countries. The Westerners serve this vibrant and diverse community through participation in football and netball.
The Westerners compete in the Southern Football Netball League Division 4. Visit the club at dandenongfnc.com and follow on Facebook.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
