About Figtree Kangaroos Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Figtree Kangaroos Football Club was established in 1999 as the Western Kangaroos, based in Figtree on the Illawarra coast south of Wollongong. The club grew from its founding year to become one of the strongest clubs in the region. The Kangaroos entered the Premier Division of the AFL South Coast competition in 2010 and have been competing at the top level ever since. AFL South Coast covers the Shoalhaven and Illawarra regions of New South Wales and is administered under the broader New South Wales AFL structure.
Club History
Since joining the AFL South Coast Premier Division in 2010, the Figtree Kangaroos have built one of the competition's most successful recent records. The men's senior team has claimed four premierships, winning in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2025. The women's program has been equally impressive, winning three women's premierships in 2015, 2020 and 2024. The 2025 AFL South Coast season saw Figtree claim both the men's and women's Premier Division flags on grand final day, a remarkable double for the club. The club also fields a junior program as part of the AFL South Coast competition structure, providing a pathway for young players from the Figtree and wider Illawarra community to develop their game.
Home Ground
The Kangaroos play their home games at Figtree Oval, located in the suburb of Figtree, approximately 5 kilometres south-west of the Wollongong CBD. The oval is the centrepiece of local sport in the area and hosts both the men's and women's senior teams. The ground is part of a cluster of sporting facilities in the suburb and is well known to Illawarra football fans.
Community and Programs
The Figtree Kangaroos run junior programs under the AFL South Coast Juniors structure and support NAB Auskick programs for children in the Figtree area. The club is a family-oriented organisation with a strong commitment to community sport on the South Coast. The women's team, which has been one of the competition's most competitive sides since its establishment, has provided a strong model for female participation in the region. The club partners with local schools and businesses to grow the game in Wollongong's western suburbs.
Figtree
Figtree is an inner western suburb of Wollongong in the City of Wollongong local government area, New South Wales. It recorded a population of 12,335 at the 2021 Census. The suburb sits south-west of Wollongong city centre, alongside the Princes Highway and the Illawarra Escarpment. Figtree is well serviced by transport links and is home to a range of schools, including Figtree High School, as well as a private hospital and various community facilities.
