About Warrnambool Football Netball Club (Blues)
Origins and Founding
The Warrnambool Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Blues, is one of Australia's oldest football clubs, with origins tracing back to 1861 when football was first played in Warrnambool. The club formally won its first recorded premiership in 1913 within the Western District Football Association. After a wartime recess from 1915 to 1919, the club returned as "Warrnambool City" in 1920 and merged with South Warrnambool in 1924, before re-establishing as a standalone club in 1928. The Blues joined the Hampden Football League - now the Hampden FNL - in 1933, where they have competed ever since.
Club History
Warrnambool's record in the Hampden FNL spans over 90 years and 23 senior football premierships. The Blues were particularly dominant from the mid-1930s through to the early 1990s, claiming premierships in 1935, 1937, 1939, 1946, 1947, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992, 2001, 2002 and 2010. The club achieved three consecutive premierships twice - in 1986-1988-1989 and earlier in 1976-1977-1978. Notable AFL alumni include Jordan Lewis, who debuted with Hawthorn in 2005 and went on to become a five-time premiership player, and Paul Couch, who debuted with Geelong in 1985 and won the 1994 Brownlow Medal. Earlier alumni include Ned Officer (Essendon, 1897), Alec McKenzie (Geelong, 1902) and numerous other players who progressed from Warrnambool to the top level of the game.
Home Ground
The Blues play their home games at Reid Oval, located in the heart of Warrnambool, Victoria. The ground has been the club's home base throughout its lengthy Hampden FNL history and has hosted football of the highest regional standard since the 1930s. Reid Oval is centrally located in Warrnambool and is shared with the club's netball program, making it a focal point for sport in the city's southwest.
Community and Programs
The Warrnambool Football Netball Club operates across multiple grades of senior football, reserve grade, and senior netball within the Hampden FNL. The club runs junior football programs under the AFL South West structure and supports NAB Auskick programs for younger children.
