About Flinders University Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Flinders University Football Club is an Australian rules football club based at Flinders University's main campus at Bedford Park, South Australia. The club competes in the Adelaide Footy League (AFL SA) and fields both Men's A and Men's B grade teams. Known informally as the Crabs, the club was established to provide university students and staff at Flinders with the opportunity to play football in a community club environment. The club joins a long tradition of tertiary institution football clubs in the South Australian amateur competition.
Club History
Flinders University Football Club has competed in the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL) since at least the mid-1990s, when the club won a Division premiership in 1996. The club continued competing through various SAAFL divisions, claiming additional Division 7 and Division 5 flags from the 2000s onwards. The SAAFL later merged with the South Australian Women's Football League (SAWFL) to form the Adelaide Footy League, and Flinders University has remained a part of the competition. The club had a well-publicised tough period around 2019, when a 29-game losing streak attracted media attention - but the club has since rebuilt strongly, with coaching improvements and a revitalised player group driving renewed participation under the Adelaide Footy League banner.
Home Ground
The Crabs play their home matches at Mitchell Park Oval and at oval facilities on or near the Flinders University campus at Bedford Park. The campus-based setting provides a convenient home for student players, with the oval accessible from the university's main buildings and student accommodation. Flinders University's main campus at Bedford Park is located 12 kilometres south of the Adelaide CBD.
Community and Programs
Flinders University FC is actively involved in student recruitment, offering free activities for university students and community members as part of a low-commitment, inclusive approach to grassroots football. The club runs regular training sessions and promotes fitness and social connection for students at one of South Australia's major universities. The university itself has over 26,000 students and is known for its research strengths in health, science, and engineering.
Bedford Park
Bedford Park is a southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located approximately 12 kilometres south of the city centre in the City of Mitcham. The suburb is best known as the location of Flinders University and the Flinders Medical Centre, two major institutions that dominate the area. Bedford Park had a population of 1,882 at the 2021 census. The suburb's character is shaped by its university and hospital precinct, with students and healthcare workers making up a significant portion of the local population.
The Crabs compete in the Adelaide Footy League and are based at Bedford Park. Follow them on Facebook for news, training times, and match day updates.
Footy Banner Information
All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using solvent inks which will not run, even if they get wet.
We recommend taping broomsticks to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. if you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon!
Return and Refund Policy
As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.
Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
