About Strathalbyn Football Club

Origins and Founding

The Strathalbyn Football Club - known as the Roosters - is one of South Australia's oldest country football clubs, with evidence of football being played in Strathalbyn as far back as 1879. The club formally affiliated with the Hills Football Association in 1903 and has been an anchor of football in the Alexandrina region ever since. The club's motto of "One Club, One Family" reflects its deep community roots in this historic town on the Angas River, approximately 60 kilometres south-east of Adelaide.

Club History

Strathalbyn won back-to-back Hills Association premierships in the early 20th century and became a prominent member of the Hills Central Association from 1931 to 1962, before becoming a foundation member of the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) in its modern era. The club has produced outstanding players, including E.J. "Tassie" Nettlefold, who won the Mail Medal (the GSFL's best and fairest award) in both 1935 and 1938. Recent premiership success has come in 1971, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1987, and the club continues to be one of the stronger clubs in the GSFL.

Home Ground

The Roosters play at Strathalbyn Oval, a well-maintained country ground that serves as the centre of the club's football operations. The oval hosts senior men's, women's, and junior matches throughout the GSFL season, and the attached facilities are shared by multiple local sporting clubs under the Strathalbyn community sports precinct.

Community and Programs

Strathalbyn Football Club runs junior programs through the GSFL and associated competitions, offering pathways for young players from Strathalbyn and surrounding townships. The club's women's program has grown in recent years, reflecting broader participation trends in Australian rules football. As a combined football and social club, the Roosters play an important role in the social fabric of Strathalbyn, particularly during the football season.

Strathalbyn

Strathalbyn is a historic town in the Alexandrina Council area, located approximately 60 kilometres south-east of Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway. The town was founded by Scottish settlers in 1839 and is renowned for its well-preserved 19th century architecture, antique shops, and natural setting along the Angas River. With a population of around 7,000, Strathalbyn serves as a regional centre for the southern Fleurieu Peninsula and has a proud tradition of community sport stretching back to the earliest years of European settlement.

The Roosters compete in the Great Southern Football League and call Strathalbyn Oval home. Visit the club website and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.

  • Footy Banner Information

All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using solvent inks which will not run, even if they get wet.

We recommend taping broomsticks to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it.  if you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through.

On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon!

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
