About Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club was formed in March 1970 and formally registered with the Junior Social Football Association in April 1970. The club was founded by a committed group of parents determined to give local children in the rapidly growing Waverley area the opportunity to play Australian rules football. In its very first season the club was so popular that a third side, a C-grade team, was established to accommodate the overflow of eager young players, including some as young as five years old.
The first set of playing jumpers was donated by parent Bill Moon, founder of Waverley Tyre Service, the business later known as Beaurepaires on Springvale Road. The club's earliest nickname was "The Mudlarks," earned through its opening seasons at Allen Street Reserve, where the ground was frequently waterlogged and the grass left uncut. Parents brought their own lawnmowers to mark boundary lines. The club relocated to Maylands Crescent Reserve after two seasons before eventually settling at its current home, Brentwood Reserve.
Club History
By 1971 the Rovers had expanded to the point where they fielded two C-grade sides, both of which contested the Grand Final that year. That same season the club entered a team in the South-East Churches and Youth Clubs Football Association, with the B team, C Whites, and the SECYFA side all winning premierships. The club has since grown consistently, affiliated with the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL), and now fields more than 225 registered players across multiple age groups.
The club also runs one of Victoria's most active Auskick clinics, regularly attracting around 250 Auskickers per season. Many Rovers graduates have gone on to play senior football with the Mulgrave Football Club, with which the Rovers maintain a close formal partnership. This feeder pathway reflects the club's long-held commitment to developing well-rounded players from an early age.
Home Ground
The Rovers have called Brentwood Reserve on Maylands Crescent, Glen Waverley home since the mid-1970s. The reserve offered a significant upgrade from earlier facilities, with a brick clubroom and, after a council extension in the mid-1970s, a purpose-built canteen. The addition of power supply at Brentwood also allowed the club to use an electronic siren to start and end matches, replacing the hand-held bell constructed by founding life member Jack Burns.
Community and Programs
The Glen Waverley Rovers JFC operates with an explicit equal-opportunity policy, ensuring all boys and girls have the chance to participate in competition football. The club's long-running Auskick program serves as the primary entry point for children new to the sport across the Glen Waverley and surrounding suburbs. Strong ties to Mulgrave FC provide a clear pathway for players progressing to Under 18 and senior competition. The club holds an affiliate membership with the EFNL, reflecting its standing as one of the more established junior clubs in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
Glen Waverley
Glen Waverley is a major suburban commercial and residential centre located approximately 19 kilometres south-east of Melbourne's central business district, within the City of Monash. The suburb recorded a population of 42,642 at the 2021 census and serves as the council seat of the Monash local government area. Glen Waverley developed rapidly as a residential suburb from the 1950s through to the 1970s - exactly the period during which the Rovers were founded - and today functions as a key transport hub on Melbourne's Glen Waverley train line.
