About Hay Lions Football Netball Club

Origins and Founding

The Hay Football Club is one of the oldest Australian rules football clubs in New South Wales, having been founded in 1876 at a meeting held at the Royal Hotel in Hay. The founding was recorded in the Riverine Grazier newspaper dated 24 May 1876, making the Lions among the earliest organised football clubs in the western Riverina. Football in Hay in those early decades reflected the deep sporting culture of the region's pastoral communities, and the club has operated - through various league affiliations - for nearly 150 years.

From the 1930s the club competed in the Mallee Murray Football League (MMFL), before joining the Kerang and District Football League in 1981, which subsequently rebranded as the Golden Rivers Football League (GRFL) in 1998. The club operates under the nickname the Lions and fields both football and netball sides.

Club History

The Lions' Golden Rivers era produced five senior premierships: 1982, 1992, 1995, 2023, and 2025. Notably, Hay claimed the final two Golden Rivers premierships before the league was disbanded at the end of the 2025 season due to a declining number of member clubs, with the Lions crowned the last-ever GRFL champions in 2025. From 2026, Hay rejoined the Central Murray Football Netball League, returning to a competition the club had last contested in 1980. The Central Murray league was previously known as the CMFNL and has strong historical ties to the western Riverina region. The Lions won the GRFL's 1982 premiership just one year into their time in the competition, establishing themselves as immediate contenders.

Home Ground

The Hay Lions play at Hay Recreation Reserve in Hay, NSW. The reserve is the primary sports facility for the Hay district and hosts both the football and netball teams. The facility has been upgraded over the decades to accommodate a growing club membership, with the Lions sharing the ground with the Hay netball club as part of a combined football and netball organisation.

Community and Programs

The Hay Lions Football Netball Club is a central pillar of Hay's community life. In a small rural town of fewer than 3,000 people, the club serves as a major social outlet and community gathering point, with game days drawing significant portions of the local population. The Lions field senior men's and women's football teams alongside a netball program, and the club maintains junior football development pathways aligned with AFL NSW/ACT programs. The club played an important role in sustaining football culture in the western Riverina throughout the 20th century.

Hay, NSW

Hay is a town in the western Riverina region of south-western New South Wales, situated approximately midway between Sydney and Adelaide at the junction of the Sturt, Cobb, and Mid-Western Highways. Built beside the Murrumbidgee River, Hay recorded a population of 2,882 at the 2021 census and serves as the administrative centre of the Hay Shire. Known for its iconic Hay Plains, the town is surrounded by one of Australia's most productive pastoral districts, long associated with Merino wool and cattle grazing.

The Lions compete in the Central Murray Football Netball League from 2026 and are based at Hay Recreation Reserve, Hay NSW. Follow the club on Facebook.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
