About Hills Phoenix AFL
Origins and Founding
Hills Phoenix AFL is a youth girls Australian football alliance established in 2025, representing a partnership between two established clubs in Sydney's Hills District: the Baulkham Hills Hawks and the Kellyville Rouse Hill Magpies. The alliance was formed to create a stronger, more sustainable girls football program for the Hills region, combining the female player bases of both clubs into a single competition entity. Hills Phoenix is described as the first girls-only AFL alliance in the Hills District and provides a pathway for girls aged 9 to 17 across Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, Rouse Hill, and surrounding suburbs.
Club History
The two founding clubs each brought strong individual histories to the alliance. The Baulkham Hills Hawks (Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club) and the Kellyville Rouse Hill Magpies (KRHJFC) recognised in 2025 that combining their girls programs would create better playing opportunities, more competitive teams, and a stronger pathway for female players to reach elite level, including the GWS Giants Academy and Sydney Juniors programs.
The Hills Phoenix launch in 2025 was described as a groundbreaking moment for girls football in the Hills District and attracted significant coverage from the GWS Giants, who highlighted coach Cate Droll's work in building the alliance. Players registering in 2026 register with either Baulkham Hills or Kellyville Rouse Hill and then play under the Hills Phoenix banner in competition.
Home Ground
Hills Phoenix plays Come & Try days and training sessions at two venues in the Hills District: Charles McLaughlin Reserve and Balmoral Road Reserve. These two grounds reflect the dual-club nature of the alliance, with Baulkham Hills and Kellyville Rouse Hill each contributing facilities to the combined program. Both reserves are centrally located in Sydney's Hills District and provide accessible venues for girls from across the catchment.
Community and Programs
Hills Phoenix is exclusively focused on girls and youth women's Australian football, targeting players aged 9 to 17. The club runs Come & Try sessions to introduce new players to the game and operates within the structure of AFL Sydney as part of the Sydney Juniors and GWS Giants Academy pathway. The alliance model is designed to ensure sustainable competition numbers while building a supportive, girls-first environment in a region where women's football participation has been growing rapidly since the establishment of the AFLW competition in 2017.
The Hills District
The Hills District is a collection of suburbs in the north-western corridor of Sydney, centred on The Hills Shire and Blacktown local government areas. It includes suburbs such as Baulkham Hills, Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Castle Hill, Norwest, and Bella Vista. The area has experienced dramatic population growth since the 2000s, driven by residential development and the opening of the Sydney Metro North West Line, and is home to a large and active community sporting culture. The Hills District is approximately 35 to 45 kilometres from the Sydney CBD depending on the suburb.
The Phoenix compete in AFL Sydney junior girls competition and call Charles McLaughlin Reserve and Balmoral Road Reserve home. Visit the club website for more information and follow them on Facebook for news and match day updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
