About Hornsby Berowra Eagles Junior AFL Club
Origins and Founding
The Hornsby Berowra Eagles Junior AFL Club has its roots in 1986, when Mal Campbell and Ian McDermott began organising Australian rules football for young players in the Hornsby area on Sydney's Upper North Shore. The club was formally incorporated in 1994 and operated for many years as the Hornsby District Junior Australian Football Club, which remains the club's official registered name. Early teams competed under the Hornsby Heights Sports Club banner before the football section gained its independent identity. By 1995 the club was known as the Hornsby and District Junior Australian Football Club, and in 2009 the name was updated to Hornsby Berowra Eagles to better reflect the broader geographic catchment the club serves across Hornsby and Berowra.
Club History
The Eagles' first premiership came in 2009 in the U11 age group, marking a significant milestone after more than two decades of building the club. The club was recognised as Greater Sydney Junior AFL Club of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, acknowledging the quality of its administration, community engagement and player development programs. In 2016, the Eagles launched an inaugural season for the North West Lightning Girls teams in alliance with Pennant Hills and Westbrook Junior AFL Clubs, expanding access to AFL for girls in the region. New club jerseys were introduced in 2018, and in 2022 the Eagles participated in the Sydney Harbour Junior AFL competition structure as part of broader league reforms.
Home Ground
The Hornsby Berowra Eagles play their home matches at Rofe Park, a public reserve in the Hornsby district on Sydney's Upper North Shore. Rofe Park provides ovals and facilities used by the Eagles across their junior age groups from under-8s through to under-18s. The ground is managed by Hornsby Shire Council and forms part of a network of sporting reserves in the bush-lined hills surrounding Hornsby and Berowra. The club trains at the ground on weekday evenings and hosts home games on Saturdays during the AFL NSW season.
Community and Programs
The Hornsby Berowra Eagles field junior teams across all AFL NSW age groups for both boys and girls, with dedicated girls teams operating under the North West Lightning alliance. The club emphasises inclusion, skill development and enjoyment, welcoming players of all experience levels. In 2015 the Eagles commenced a girls training initiative with partner clubs Pennant Hills and Westbrook, growing girls AFL participation across the Upper North Shore. The club has consistently attracted families from Hornsby, Berowra, Mount Colah, Asquith, Waitara and surrounding suburbs.
Hornsby and Berowra
Hornsby is a major commercial and residential hub on Sydney's Upper North Shore, located approximately 25 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD. It serves as the administrative centre of the Hornsby Shire local government area and is home to Westfield Hornsby, one of the largest shopping centres in northern Sydney. Hornsby is on the North Shore and Northern Lines of the Sydney Trains network, providing direct rail connections to the city. Berowra, further north along the Pacific Highway, is a smaller suburban community known for its bushland setting and the popular Berowra Waters marina precinct. Together, the two communities form the natural catchment for the Eagles' junior AFL program.
The Eagles compete in the Sydney Harbour Junior AFL and call Rofe Park home. Visit the club website, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and registration updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
