About Houghton Districts Raiders Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Houghton Districts Football Club (HDFC) has roots stretching back to 1915, when the original Houghton Football Club was established in the Adelaide Hills. After passing through five different associations over seven decades, the Houghton club merged with neighbouring Paracombe in 1980 to form Para Houghton, but that merged entity disbanded at the end of 1982 due to a player shortage. The Houghton Oval was then taken up by a newly formed club - Banksia Park Old Scholars - which played in the SAAFL from 1983 and won four premierships (1984, 1985, 1986, and 1999). In 1995 the club renamed itself Houghton Districts, taking the name of the picturesque Adelaide Hills location it calls home, and has competed as the Raiders ever since.

Club History
The Raiders have built a proud record across four decades of competition in the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL) and its successor, the Adelaide Footy League. The club's four senior premierships - in 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1999 - came during the Banksia Park Old Scholars era, with the club competing at various divisional levels since its name change to Houghton Districts in 1995. The club has competed in Division 7 of the Adelaide Footy League in recent seasons. A landmark achievement came in 2024 when Houghton Districts Football Club won the National Pharmacies SANFL Juniors Club of the Year Award - recognition of outstanding performance both on-field and in club administration. The club describes itself as "the country club in the Adelaide Footy League."

Home Ground
The Raiders play at Houghton Memorial Oval, located within a stone's throw of the Houghton village square. The oval and its facilities are community-owned and maintained by the volunteer group Houghton, Inglewood and Hermitage Memorial Park Inc. The ground's setting in the Adelaide Hills provides a scenic backdrop for match days, with the natural hillscape and rural character of Houghton making it one of the more distinctive grounds in the Adelaide Footy League.

Community and Programs
HDFC operates as a unified club with a single committee overseeing both senior and junior operations. The senior program fields four teams in the Adelaide Footy League, while the junior program runs seven teams in the SANFL Juniors competition - a comprehensive offering for a club based in a small rural township. The 2024 SANFL Juniors Club of the Year Award reflects the club's dedication to junior development and community involvement across the Houghton, Inglewood, and Hermitage areas.

Houghton
Houghton is a small town in the Adelaide Hills, located approximately 20 kilometres north-east of the Adelaide CBD in the City of Tea Tree Gully and the Adelaide Hills Council local government area. The town had a population of 511 at the 2021 census. Surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and orchards, Houghton is situated near the wine-producing region of the Eden Valley corridor and is known for its quiet, rural character. The town of Inglewood is adjacent, and together these communities form a close-knit agricultural and residential district in the northern Adelaide Hills.
