Founded in 1945, the West Whyalla Football Club has a proud and enduring history in the Whyalla Football League, and FootyBanners.com is here to help the Dragons celebrate every milestone with a custom banner that does justice to that legacy.
Simple to Order
Choose from Single Player, Two Player, Team, or Grand Final banner options and provide the player's name, surname, guernsey number, and milestone (for example, Lachlan Moore, #17, 100 Games). Banners are produced with permanent inks on heavy-duty paper that handles a blazing South Australian afternoon at the ground.
Two Players, One Banner
When two Dragons players share a milestone on the same match day, our Two Player banner celebrates them both in one standout design. Supply both players' names and guernsey numbers and we'll handle everything from there.
Team Banners for Group Celebrations
For groups of 3 to 6 players reaching a milestone at the same time, our Team Banner option is the perfect choice. Set a powerful top-line message like "Unleash the Dragons!" and give your squad a run-through they'll always remember.
Wall Keepsake Banners
Available in Small, Medium, and Large, our Wall Keepsake Banners are printed on thick recyclable paper with waterproof inks. A quality keepsake for the Dragons clubrooms or a proud display at home celebrating a great career at West Whyalla.
About West Whyalla Football Club
Origins and Founding
The West Whyalla Football Club was established in 1941, initially competing as "Army West" during World War II from 1941 to 1944. After the war, the club took on the West Whyalla name and became a founding participant in the modern Whyalla Football League, competing from 1941 through to the 1960s, then re-entering the competition after a brief spell in the Spencer Gulf Football League (SGFL) from 1967 onwards. The club adopted the nickname Dragons and has worn that identity ever since. The Whyalla Football League, of which West Whyalla is a member, is affiliated with the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and is based on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.
Club History
The West Whyalla Dragons are one of the most decorated clubs in the Whyalla Football League's history, having claimed 22 senior premierships across eight decades of competition. The Dragons dominated the competition through the late 1950s and early 1970s, winning flags in 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1963, 1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1976. After a gap of several years, West Whyalla continued to add to its tally with premierships in 1983, 1998, and 2005. The club's most recent dynasty has been truly remarkable - the Dragons have claimed six premierships between 2012 and 2023, winning in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023. The Whyalla Football League's historical premiership records confirm West Whyalla as one of the league's most successful clubs, trailing only Central Whyalla's 29 titles with 22 of their own.
Home Ground
West Whyalla plays its home matches at Memorial Oval in Whyalla, with games also held at Bennett Oval at Whyalla Stuart. Memorial Oval is the primary venue for Whyalla Football League matches and serves as the central hub for the competition across the city. The oval hosts senior, reserve, and junior competitions throughout the season from approximately March to September.
Community and Programs
The West Whyalla Football Club is an important sporting institution in the Whyalla community, contributing to the city's active football culture alongside six other clubs in the Whyalla Football League. Every club in the league is required to field teams from juniors through to seniors, ensuring a full pathway for players developing in the region. The club operates in a community that has a strong tradition of supporting Australian rules football, with the game having been played in Whyalla since the city's establishment in 1920. The Dragons' sustained success on the field has helped maintain strong community support and player participation throughout the decades.
Whyalla
Whyalla is a city in South Australia located approximately 395 kilometres northwest of Adelaide on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula. With a population of around 20,880 (2021 urban centre census), it is the fourth most populous city in South Australia and is one of three cities - along with Port Pirie and Port Augusta - that form the "Iron Triangle" of regional South Australia. Whyalla is historically known as the "Steel City" due to its integrated steelworks, established by BHP in the early 20th century, and remains a major industrial hub. The city falls within the federal division of Grey and the state electorate of Giles.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
