About Longwood Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Longwood Football Netball Club was formed in April 1888, when the town played its first recorded match against a combined Castle Creek and Euroa football team in May of that year. The club is one of the oldest continuously operating Australian rules football clubs in northern Victoria, now spanning well over 130 years of community football. The club was originally known as the Bullants before adopting its current nickname, the Redlegs. Longwood competes in the Kyabram and District Football Netball League (Kyabram DFL), which the club joined in 2010 following the folding of the Benalla and District Football League at the end of the 2009 season.
Club History
The Redlegs have accumulated 11 senior premierships over their long history: 1906, 1908, 1924, 1930, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1953, 1977, 1985, and 2000. The back-to-back flags of 1934, 1935, and 1936 represent the club's most successful stretch, during an era when country football in the upper Hume region was fiercely competitive. The 2000 premiership, Longwood's most recent, came in their final years in the Benalla and District Football League before the competition dissolved and the club transitioned to the Kyabram DFL. The club's first match in 1888 against Castle Creek and Euroa is one of the earliest recorded football fixtures in the Strathbogie region, underscoring how formative the Longwood club was to the establishment of Australian football in north-east Victoria.
Home Ground
The Redlegs play at Longwood Recreation Reserve in Longwood, which has served the club since the 19th century. The reserve is the social heart of the Longwood township and hosts the club's home games, training sessions, and netball competitions. The ground is set against the rural backdrop typical of the Strathbogie Ranges foothills, where the Longwood community has rallied around the football club for generations. The club also fields netball teams at the reserve, operating as a combined football and netball club.
Community and Programs
The Longwood FNC operates within a small rural community and plays an outsized role in local life. The club serves as the primary community hub for the Longwood district, with game days bringing together residents from Longwood itself and surrounding farming properties. The club fields both a football and netball program, making it a genuinely combined football and netball club in the tradition of Victorian country football. Despite its small catchment, the club has consistently competed in the Kyabram DFL since 2010.
Longwood
Longwood is a small town in the Shire of Strathbogie in northern Victoria, located approximately 149 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. At the 2021 census, the town had a population of just 263 residents, making it one of the smaller communities in regional Victoria. Longwood sits on the old Sydney to Melbourne Highway corridor and was originally established as a staging post for horse-drawn coaches. The town's railway station, opened in 1881, cemented its position as a service point for the surrounding agricultural district, which is characterised by mixed farming and grazing on the lower slopes of the Strathbogie Ranges.
The Redlegs compete in the Kyabram and District Football Netball League and play at Longwood Recreation Reserve, Longwood VIC. Follow the club on Facebook.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
