About Mallala Magpies
Origins and Founding
The Mallala Football Club, known as the Magpies, has one of the longest and most distinguished histories in South Australian country football. Football was played in Mallala as early as 1904, with the club officially forming in 1908. Mallala was a founding member of the Adelaide Plains Football Association (now the Adelaide Plains Football League, or APFL) when it was established on 4 May 1909, with delegates from Mallala attending the inaugural meeting at Dublin. The club has competed continuously in the APFL ever since - the only club to have done so without interruption throughout the competition's history.
Club History
The Mallala Magpies have been the dominant force in the Adelaide Plains Football League across more than a century of competition, winning 28 senior premierships. Their early golden era came from 1912 to 1925, when they won 10 flags including a remarkable run from 1912 to 1915. Further premierships came in 1953, 1955, 1959, 1962, 1963, 1970, 1974, 1978, and 1979. The modern era has been equally impressive, with premierships in 1990, 1997, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2020, and 2025, making the Magpies one of the most decorated clubs in South Australian country football.
The nowandthen.org.au historical records note that in the early years of the competition, Mallala won all premierships from 1912 to 1925 except 1922, a period of sustained dominance that established the club's identity as a powerhouse of Adelaide Plains football.
Home Ground
The Mallala Magpies play their home games at Mallala Oval in the town of Mallala, approximately 60 kilometres north of Adelaide. The oval site was relocated in 1915 from the Mallala People's Park to its current location due to the construction of the railway line through the town. The grandstand was built in 1923 and the first dedicated club rooms were constructed in 1959 using all volunteer labour. The ground has been continuously developed since and remains the heart of the Mallala football community.
Community and Programs
The Mallala Football Club is a central institution in the Mallala community, with a rich tradition of local family involvement. The club's family names spanning multiple generations - including Angus, Franks, and Marshman families whose descendants were still playing in the early 21st century - reflect the deep roots of the club in the district. The club runs B grade and junior competitions alongside the senior program, providing opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels in the Mid North region of South Australia.
Mallala
Mallala is a small country town in South Australia's Mid North region, located approximately 60 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Horrocks Highway. With a population of around 1,400 residents, Mallala serves as the service centre for a productive farming district known for grain growing and sheep grazing. The town is surrounded by the Adelaide Plains - the flat, fertile agricultural land that gives the local football league its name. The football club is the cornerstone of community life in Mallala, bringing the town together each weekend throughout the winter season.
The Magpies compete in the APFL and call Mallala Oval home. Follow the Mallala Magpies on Facebook for club news, match results, and season updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
