About Mernda Demons Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Mernda Football Netball Club, known as the Demons, has a history stretching back to 1891 when it was formed as the South Yan Yean Football Club. The club operated under that name for 23 years before renaming itself the Mernda Football Club in 1914. In 1932, the club again changed its name to the Plenty Rovers Football Club and relocated to the Doreen Recreation Reserve, where it played brief stints in the Diamond Valley Football League (DVFL) in 1937 to 1939, 1941, and 1947. In 1965, the club returned to the Mernda Football Club name when it moved to the Mernda Recreation Reserve.
Club History
After rejoining the DVFL in Division 2 in 1987, the Mernda Football Club has built steadily in the competition now known as the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL). The club won its first DVFL premiership in 1991 and, in a landmark 2012 season, claimed the Seniors and Reserves double. The Demons currently compete in Division 3 of the NFNL and have an active women's team also competing in the NFNL women's competition. The club has deep roots in the local community, having served the Mernda area in various forms for more than 130 years.
Home Ground
The Demons play at Waterview Recreation Reserve in Mernda. The ground serves as the home base for both the senior and women's programs, as well as the club's netball side. Waterview Reserve is well-positioned within the rapidly growing Mernda community and provides modern facilities appropriate for NFNL competition. The club previously played at Mernda Recreation Reserve before transitioning to Waterview Reserve.
Community and Programs
The Mernda Football Netball Club runs football and netball programs for players of all ages and genders. The club fields senior men's and women's football sides as well as netball teams, reflecting the full football-netball club model that has become common in the NFNL. Junior programs provide a pathway for young players from the rapidly expanding Mernda and Doreen communities, where strong residential growth in recent years has significantly increased the pool of potential players.
Mernda
Mernda is a suburb of Melbourne located 26 kilometres northeast of the CBD in the City of Whittlesea local government area. It recorded a population of 23,369 at the 2021 census, reflecting the suburb's explosive residential growth as part of Melbourne's northern urban corridor. The first European settlement in the area dates to 1841, when The Bridge Inn and a flour mill were established on the Plenty River. Situated near the Yan Yean Reservoir, the area developed as a farming and recreational region before its current transformation into a major residential suburb.
The Demons compete in the NFNL and call Waterview Recreation Reserve home. Visit the club website, follow them on Facebook, or find them on Instagram.
Footy Banner Information
Material: All Milestone Banners made by Footybanners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet. They are fully recyclable.
How to Use: We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through. There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon! This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.
Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.Pro Tip: Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
Return and Refund Policy
As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.
