About Moonta Demons
Origins and Founding
The Moonta Football Club was established on 30 May 1876, over the bar of the Prince of Wales Hotel, when a group of Cornish copper miners - known locally as "Cousin Jacks" - gathered to discuss the game of football. This was fifteen years after the discovery of copper at Moonta that transformed the town. The first recorded match between Moonta and Wallaroo was played at Wallaroo Oval on 12 September 1874. The club was originally known as the "Natives". The Yorke Peninsula Football Association (YPFA) was formed in 1888, with its inaugural meeting held in Moonta, and the club has competed in the Yorke Peninsula competition ever since.
Club History
The Moonta Demons have amassed an outstanding premiership record across the YPFL and its predecessor competitions. A Grade flags have been won in 1929, 1932, 1937, 1938, 1947, 1949, 1960, 1963, 2005, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2024 - making Moonta one of the most decorated clubs on Yorke Peninsula. The club has also claimed 11 B Grade premierships and multiple colts titles across the decades. In August 2024, a special match commemorating 150 years of football between Wallaroo and Moonta was played at Moonta Oval, celebrating their historic rivalry stretching back to 1874.
Home Ground
The Demons play at Moonta Football Oval, situated in the town of Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula. The oval has hosted football at the top level of the YPFL for well over a century and is the social and sporting heart of the Moonta community. The ground is also used by the club's junior and women's sides, which compete across various YPFL age divisions each season.
Community and Programs
The Moonta Football Club fields multiple sides including U9, U11, U14, U17, B Grade, A Grade, Senior Women, and U16 Girls teams, reflecting a deep commitment to grassroots football development. The club operates alongside the Moonta Netball Club and together they form a central pillar of community life in Moonta. The club also hosts regular social events and fundraising activities that support both the football and netball programs throughout the year.
Moonta
Moonta is a town on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, approximately 166 kilometres north-northwest of Adelaide. It is one of three Copper Coast towns - alongside Wallaroo and Kadina - historically known as "Little Cornwall" due to the strong Cornish immigrant heritage that shaped the region's identity through the 19th-century copper mining era. The broader Moonta urban area had a population of around 4,700 at the 2016 census, making it one of the largest communities on the Yorke Peninsula.
The Moonta Demons compete in the Yorke Peninsula Football League and call Moonta Football Oval home. For more information visit the official website, or follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
