About Mooroolbark Mustangs Football Club
Origins and Founding
Mooroolbark Football Club was established in 1966 and has competed in the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL) - then known as the Eastern Football League (EFL) - ever since. The club was originally known as the Falcons, wearing dark green and gold guernseys for the first 37 years of its existence, before rebranding as the Mustangs around 2003. The club's roots in Mooroolbark run deep: when new coach Heath Black joined in 2018, he recalled that his father and uncle had both played at Heights Reserve in the 1980s, and that his step-mother's parents had helped build the social rooms back in the 1960s.
Club History
The Mustangs have a detailed and well-documented history of competing across multiple EFNL divisions. The club won a Division 3 senior premiership in 1988, then a second senior premiership in 2009, before the modern era brought sustained Division 1 and 2 competition. After EFNL realignment in 2018 promoted the club to Division 1, the Mustangs finished the 2022 home-and-away season with a 16-2 record - the best winning rate since 1986 - before losing the Division 1 Grand Final to East Ringwood. That same 2022 season saw the club play its 1,000th EFNL game in Round 2 against Beaconsfield at Heights Reserve. In 2021 the Senior Women's team was formed and rapidly ascended, winning the Division 4 Grand Final in 2022, Division 3 Grand Final in 2023, and the Division 2 Grand Final in 2024 before being promoted to Division 1. The club has also produced players who went on to VFL and AFL level, with the honour roll tracking distinguished alumni since 1966.
Home Ground
The Mustangs play at Heights Reserve, 13 Longfellow Avenue, Mooroolbark VIC 3138. The ground has been home to the club since its founding in 1966, and the social rooms built in the 1960s remain part of the fabric of the facility. Heights Reserve sits in a quiet residential part of Mooroolbark, accessible from both Longfellow Avenue and surrounding streets, and has hosted thousands of games across the club's senior, reserves, and women's teams over more than six decades.
Community and Programs
The Mooroolbark Football Club runs a full pathway from junior football through to senior men's and women's teams. The Senior Women's program, which launched in 2021, has become one of the most successful in the EFNL, winning three consecutive division premierships from 2022 to 2024 and reaching Division 1 by 2025. The club also runs a Veteran Women's team. To honour club legends, the Senior Best and Fairest medal was renamed the Matt Polkinghorne Medal, the Reserves Best and Fairest became the Denis Robinson Medal, and the Under 19 award is now the Paul Toleman Medal - each celebrating players who gave exceptional service to the Mustangs.
Mooroolbark
Mooroolbark is a suburb in Melbourne's outer east, approximately 37 kilometres from the CBD in the Yarra Ranges Council local government area. The suburb had an estimated resident population of 24,301 as of June 2025, and is forecast to grow to around 26,899 by 2046. Mooroolbark borders Croydon to the west and Lilydale to the east, and sits in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Its strong family and community character makes it natural territory for a club that has served the area for over 60 years.
The Mustangs compete in the Eastern Football Netball League and call Heights Reserve, Mooroolbark home. Visit the club website for fixtures and news, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for match day updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
