About Mt Eliza Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Mt Eliza Football Club was formed at a meeting held on 7 July 1964. The club's origins can be traced back to 1963, when a group of Grade 6 students at Mount Eliza State School - Frank Boyd, Richard Tenniswood, and Bill Klauer - complained to their teacher, Alan Young, that Mount Eliza had no local football club. Young took the idea to his father-in-law, Jim Greenaway, and following 12 months of planning, the club was formally established. In those early years the Mornington Peninsula had two distinct football competitions, and Mt Eliza chose to join the Nepean Football League, providing local players with a genuine home-ground option without travelling to Frankston or Mornington.
The club quickly found success at junior level, winning junior premierships in consecutive years in the mid-1960s. The Seniors took longer to establish themselves at the top level of Peninsula football, but the club eventually joined and competed in the Mornington Peninsula Football Netball League (MPFNL), which has been their competition home ever since.
Club History
The Redlegs have become one of the MPFNL's most prominent clubs in recent times, winning the MPFNL Division 1 senior premiership in 2024, defeating Dromana by 23 points in the Grand Final. In September 2024, the club celebrated one of the greatest days in its history when it won three premiership trophies on a single day - the Seniors Division 1 flag alongside two other grade flags. The club also contested the 2012 and 2016 grand finals, falling to Frankston YCW on both occasions in front of large Peninsula crowds. The Redlegs were runners-up again in the 2025 Grand Final, defeated by Rosebud by one point. The club fields three senior football teams and five adult netball sides, reflecting its comprehensive club structure.
Home Ground
The Redlegs play at Mount Eliza Recreation Reserve in Mt Eliza, which has served as the club's home for decades. The reserve is located within the quiet coastal residential streets of Mount Eliza and provides the community anchor for the club's football and netball programs. Training nights on the reserve draw players from across the suburb and nearby areas of Mornington and Frankston South.
Community and Programs
Mt Eliza FNC operates junior football sides competing in the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League, providing a clear pathway from Auskick through to senior ranks. The club's netball division, introduced in the modern era, now fields five adult teams. The club maintains strong school and community ties within the suburb, with the annual player progression from juniors to the seniors serving as a key part of Mt Eliza's community sporting culture.
Mount Eliza
Mount Eliza is an affluent coastal suburb on the Mornington Peninsula, located approximately 48 kilometres south of Melbourne's CBD on the eastern shore of Port Phillip Bay. The suburb has a population of around 15,000 and is known for its executive homes, private schools (including Peninsula Grammar and Toorak College), and proximity to beaches along Moondah Beach and the surrounding coastline. Mount Eliza forms part of the Mornington Peninsula Shire and is a sought-after residential address attracting families making the sea-change from Melbourne's inner suburbs.
The Redlegs compete in the MPFNL Division 1 and play at Mount Eliza Recreation Reserve. For more information visit the Mt Eliza FNC website, or follow the club on Facebook.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
