About Northcote Park Football and Netball Club

Origins and Founding

Northcote Park Football and Netball Club traces its origins to the Prince of Wales Football Club, which competed in the Methodist Football Association from the 1940s. As the Prince of Wales FC, the club claimed five consecutive premierships between 1947 and 1951. In 1952, the club was renamed Northcote Park and moved into the Metropolitan Football League, marking the beginning of a new era. The Cougars nickname was adopted as the club built its identity across Melbourne's northern suburbs.

Club History

The Cougars won their first premiership as Northcote Park in the Metropolitan League in 1957. They then moved to the Panton Hills League, where they won three consecutive premierships in 1977, 1978, and 1979. This success earned promotion to the Diamond Valley Football League (DVFL), one of Melbourne's most competitive suburban competitions. Northcote Park won the DVFL second division premiership in 1985 and again in 1994, before establishing themselves in the first division. A golden era followed with first division premierships in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 - the four-peat from 1999 to 2002 being a record for the DVFL. In 2022, now competing in the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL, formerly the DVFL), the Cougars claimed another four consecutive premierships, creating more league history. The club has won a total of 17 premierships across its history. Notable alumni include former Carlton and Victorian representative Peter Dean, ex-Sydney Swans player Barry Mitchell, and Stawell Gift winner Glen Crawford.

Home Ground

The Cougars play at Bill Lawry Oval on Westgarth Street, Northcote, one of the premier community football venues in Melbourne's northern suburbs. The club relocated to Westgarth St in 1989 after the former tenant, Northcote Football Club, played its final VFA season in 1987. In 1996, a major redevelopment was undertaken in partnership with Darebin City Council, extending the club rooms, adding a viewing area, new change rooms, and a gymnasium. Previously, the club played at McDonell Park before the move to Westgarth St.

Community and Programs

Northcote Park runs men's, women's, and netball programs under the banner of the Football and Netball Social Club, reflecting the club's commitment to being an inclusive community organisation. The club hosts social events throughout the year and has junior programs aligned with the Northcote Park area. The club rooms serve as a social venue for members and supporters well beyond the football and netball seasons.

Northcote

Northcote is an inner suburb of Melbourne located approximately 6 kilometres north-east of the CBD, within the City of Darebin. With a population of around 25,276 at the 2021 Census, Northcote is known for its eclectic inner-city character, thriving cafe culture, and proximity to the Merri Creek parklands. The suburb is a vibrant mix of long-standing working-class heritage and a newer creative community that has grown up around High Street.

The Cougars compete in the Northern Football Netball League and call Bill Lawry Oval on Westgarth Street home. For more information, visit the Northcote Park Football and Netball Club website, find them on Facebook, or follow them on Instagram.

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    • Eco-friendly & Recyclable: All banners are fully recyclable when the celebration is over.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
