About Pennant Hills Demons AFL Club
Origins and Founding
Australian Rules Football arrived in Pennant Hills in 1966 with the formation of the Junior Club. The Pennant Hills Australian Football Club - the Senior Club - was founded in 1971 through the efforts of Kerry James and the late Ern Holmes, two locals who wanted to provide a senior pathway for the growing pool of junior players in the area. In its inaugural 1971 season the club competed in Third Division. The club was promoted to the top-grade Sydney Football League (now AFL Sydney Premier Division) in 1977, winning its first First Division game against North Shore. From 1987 to 1992, the club was briefly renamed The Hills Australian Football Club before reverting to the Pennant Hills name in 1993. Find the club online at phafl.com.au.

Club History
Pennant Hills is one of the most decorated clubs in AFL Sydney history, having won five Premier Division premierships: 2000, 2006, 2008, 2015, and 2017. The 2017 flag was especially remarkable - the Demons finished fifth on the ladder with just seven wins before defeating Sydney University in the grand final at Blacktown International Sports Park to claim the flag. The club has also been Premier Division runners-up in 1982, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2013, and 2014, and was minor premiers in 2007. At lower grades the club has won Reserve Grade flags (1994, 1996, 2018) and Division Three premierships (1975, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008). Pennant Hills has produced a remarkable list of AFL players, including Lenny Hayes (St Kilda, 2010 Norm Smith Medallist), Keiran Jack (Sydney Swans), Brandon Jack (Sydney Swans), Braeden Campbell (Sydney Swans, pick 5 in the 2020 AFL Draft), Kieren Briggs (GWS Giants), and James Peatling (GWS/Adelaide). The Phelan Medal, awarded to the Premier Division best and fairest, has been won by Pennant Hills players in 1983, 1988, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2019, 2022, and 2023.

Home Ground
The Demons' home ground is Mike Kenny Oval at Greenway Park, Cherrybrook. The club moved to Mike Kenny Oval in 2011 after a significant upgrade funded jointly by the AFL, Hornsby Council, the club, and fellow users of the ground including Westbrook Junior Club. Prior to 2011, the club's home was Ern Holmes Oval at the Pennant Hills Sports Complex - a ground named in 1989 in honour of club co-founder Ern Holmes, who passed away in 1985. Ern Holmes Oval remains the spiritual home of the club and continues to host junior competition.

Community and Programs
Pennant Hills AFC serves as the senior pathway for a network of junior clubs in the Hills district, including Pennant Hills, Westbrook, and Hornsby junior clubs. The club fields men's and women's Premier Division sides as well as reserve and under-18 teams. The Women's team entered the AFL Sydney Premier Division in 2020. Pennant Hills has consistently won the Sydney AFL Club of the Year award and has been described as a 'footy factory' for the number of elite players it has developed from grassroots football in Sydney's north-west.

Pennant Hills
Pennant Hills is a residential suburb on Sydney's Upper North Shore, located approximately 30 kilometres north-west of the CBD within the Hornsby Shire Council area. With a population of around 10,000 residents, the suburb is characterised by bushland settings, established family homes, and its position at the foothills of the Hawkesbury sandstone plateau. Pennant Hills is well served by rail on the T1 North Shore Line and is close to the Hills Shire major centres of Castle Hill and Norwest. The area has a strong community spirit, and the Demons have been a central part of Hills district sporting life for over five decades.
