About Warmun Eagles Football Club
Origins and Founding
Warmun Eagles Football Club represents the Warmun Aboriginal community - also known as Turkey Creek - in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. The Eagles compete in the Northern Division of the East Kimberley Football League (EKFL), a competition established in 1970 that covers some of the most remote communities in Australia. The club is an expression of the Warmun community's deep engagement with Australian rules football and plays a vital role in providing sporting and cultural connection for local Aboriginal people.
Club History
The Warmun Eagles have been a competitive force in the EKFL Northern Division for many years. In the 2025 EKFL Northern Division season, the Eagles finished fifth on the ladder. The club has featured in finals series across various seasons and has contributed to a rich tradition of EKFL competition from the Warmun community. In 2023, the EKFL restructured into a Northern Division based around Kununurra and a Southern Division based around Halls Creek, reducing the extraordinary travel burdens that had previously involved some clubs travelling over 1,000 kilometres for away fixtures. The Eagles benefited from this reform, with travel for Northern Division fixtures now more manageable. The club has also been part of the EKFL's effort to expand women's football participation across the East Kimberley.
Home Ground
The Warmun Eagles play their home games at Warmun Oval, located in the Warmun community. The ground underwent a major redevelopment funded by a $1.3 million investment, delivering significantly upgraded facilities for the club and the broader Warmun community. The redevelopment included new changerooms, improving player amenities at one of the most remote football grounds in Australia. The upgraded oval has enhanced Warmun's capacity to host EKFL fixtures and community events.
Community and Programs
Football is central to life in the Warmun community. The Warmun Eagles embody the spirit of the EKFL's mission to serve isolated Aboriginal communities through sport, with the club providing a structured outlet for young players and a source of community pride. The EKFL as a whole has produced notable AFL talent, including Sam Petrevski-Seton from Halls Creek, demonstrating the pathway that Kimberley football can provide to elite levels. The Eagles contribute to this tradition by developing local players and fostering a strong football culture in Warmun from an early age.
Warmun
Warmun (also known as Turkey Creek) is a remote Aboriginal community in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, located approximately 170 kilometres south-west of Kununurra on the Great Northern Highway. The community is home to several hundred people, predominantly from the Gija language group, and is recognised as a significant cultural centre - Warmun is famous as the birthplace of Gija art, with the community producing a number of internationally acclaimed artists. The surrounding landscape features the Carr Boyd Ranges and is part of the broader East Kimberley, known for its ancient gorges, boab trees, and dramatic seasonal floods. The EKFL competition has been a constant thread in community life at Warmun, with football providing connection both within the community and across the broader East Kimberley region.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
