About Pennant Hills Westbrook Demons

Origins and Founding

The Pennant Hills Westbrook Demons have their origins in the junior football movement that began in north-west Sydney in 1966, when 25-year-old Bill Carey - a senior player with the Balmain Club - together with Ernie Holmes, Ken Telfer and George Brack founded the Pennant Hills Junior Australian Football Club. The inaugural committee meeting was held in the living room of Bill Carey's mother's house at North Turramurra. Ernie Holmes served as the club's first president, and the Demons' traditional home ground - Ern Holmes Oval - was later named in his honour. The vision expressed at that founding meeting was to develop young players who could one day form the nucleus of a senior first grade side - a vision that would be fully realised within a few years.

Club History

The Pennant Hills Demons entered senior competition in 1971, when Kerry James formed a senior team in Division 3 of the Sydney Districts Association to provide graduates of the junior program a pathway into senior football. In 1971, the junior club also won its first premierships, in the under-11s and under-13s. In 1974 the club adopted the red and blue colours of the VFL's Melbourne Football Club. Back-to-back senior and reserves premierships followed in 1975, and the senior side claimed another flag in 1976, defeating Warringah by 95 points. These successes led to promotion to the NSW First Grade competition in 1977. The club won an under-19s premiership in 1993 and claimed its first senior First Grade flag (the Bill Hart Trophy) in 2000. The Westbrook junior program has continued to provide a development pathway for young players across the Pennant Hills and Westbrook areas, competing in Sydney AFL junior competitions.

Home Ground

The Demons are based at Ern Holmes Oval in Pennant Hills, named after the club's first president and local football pioneer. The ground has been central to the club's identity since the early years of the junior program and continues to serve as the base for the club's training and home match activities. The Westbrook program operates from a similar catchment in the local area, providing junior football opportunities to families across the northern suburbs of Sydney.

Community and Programs

The Pennant Hills Westbrook Demons operate youth AFL programs catering to junior players in the Pennant Hills, Westbrook and surrounds area. The combined Pennant Hills Westbrook entity ensures that young players from across the local community have access to structured AFL pathways from junior level through to the senior club. The junior program follows Sydney AFL's competition structure for junior-age players across the Hills District and northern Sydney.

Pennant Hills

Pennant Hills is a suburb in the Hills District of northern Sydney, New South Wales, located approximately 25 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD within the Hornsby Shire. The suburb is predominantly residential, characterised by bushland-adjacent housing and a strong community sporting culture. The Hills District has historically been one of the more active regions for Australian rules football in New South Wales, with the Pennant Hills club among the longer-established AFL clubs in the greater Sydney area.

The Demons compete in the Sydney AFL competition and call Ern Holmes Oval, Pennant Hills home. Visit the club at phafl.com.au and follow on Facebook.

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
