About Preston Bullants AFC
Origins and Founding
The Preston Bullants Amateur Football Club (PBAFC) was established in 2009 by a group of graduating colts players from the Preston Bullants Junior Football Club who had won a premiership in 2008 and needed a new senior home. The club first competed in a VAFA Under 18 competition before entering the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) in 2011 under the name Northern Bullants. In 2012 the team changed its name to Northern Blues and entered the Division 4 competition as a senior men's side. In 2016 the club rebranded once more, adopting the Preston Bullants name to better reflect the values and identity of the surrounding Preston community.
Club History
The Bullants wasted no time establishing themselves as a force in the VAFA. In their inaugural senior men's season in 2013, they claimed the Division 4 premiership despite finishing sixth during the home-and-away rounds. Back-to-back flags followed as they won the Division 3 premiership in 2014, coached throughout by George Wakim - who would go on to lead the senior men's side for nine consecutive seasons through to 2021. A Division 2 premiership was added in 2016, the same year the club relocated to its current home at W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve. The Division 1 flag came in 2019, giving the club five senior men's premierships across seven seasons. The women's program launched in 2018, reaching the grand final in its first year, and winning the women's premiership in 2019 in just its second season of competition.
Home Ground
The Bullants play their home matches at W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve, located on the corner of Malpas Street and Donald Street in Preston. The club moved to this facility in 2016 as part of its rebranding and community consolidation, and the ground has become a focal point for football in the suburb. The reserve is named in honour of Walter Reid Ruthven, who received the Victoria Cross during the First World War.
Community and Programs
Preston Bullants AFC operates senior men's, reserve men's, Under 19 men's, and senior women's sides, providing a clear pathway from juniors at the affiliated Preston Bullants Junior Football Club through to adult football. The club has emphasised community connection and inclusion since its founding, drawing players from the diverse Preston area. Players from the club have also been recognised at state level, with senior men having trained with VFL club Northern Bullants (now Preston FC) and players such as Luke Green and Nick Perizzolo representing the Northern Bullants VFL program.
Preston
Preston is an established inner-northern suburb of Melbourne, located approximately 8 kilometres north of the CBD. At the 2021 Census, Preston recorded a population of approximately 33,000 residents, making it one of the more densely populated suburbs in the City of Darebin. The suburb is known for its multicultural character, tree-lined streets, and proximity to the Northland Shopping Centre and Plenty Road retail strip. Preston is served by the South Morang and Hurstbridge train lines, making it well connected to central Melbourne.
The Bullants compete in the VAFA and call W.R. Ruthven V.C. Reserve, Preston, home. Find out more at prestonbullantsafc.com, follow the club on Facebook, or connect on Instagram at @prestonbullantsafc.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
