About Railways RFC Geraldton Football Club

Origins and Founding

The Railways Football Club, known as the Blues, is one of the oldest football clubs in regional Western Australia, with its origins dating to 1904, when four clubs - Imperials, Lumpers, Rovers and Railways - met to formalise football in the Geraldton region. The club competed in the Geraldton Football Association from those earliest days and became a founding member of the Great Northern Football League (GNFL) in 1961, when the GNFL was formed through a merger of the Geraldton Football Association and the Northampton-Upper Chapman Football Association.

Club History

Railways are the second-most successful club in GNFL history, having claimed 12 premierships: 1961, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1989, 2010 and 2011. The 2011 season was particularly dominant - the Blues went through the home-and-away rounds undefeated with 18 wins, before claiming the premiership in the grand final over Rovers. The club has also featured in multiple subsequent grand finals, including runners-up finishes in 2012, 2016 and 2017. The GNFL itself includes seven clubs from the Geraldton and Midwest region, with Railways consistently among the competition's powerhouse teams.

Railways have produced several players who progressed to AFL level. Liam Anthony (born 1987), who went through East Fremantle in the WAFL, was selected by North Melbourne at pick 43 in the 2008 AFL National Draft and played 58 AFL games. Jayden Schofield was drafted by the Western Bulldogs at pick 74 in the 2010 AFL National Draft. More recently, Fina Dethlefsen - who played for Railways before progressing through the WAFLW - was signed by the Richmond Tigers in December 2025.

Home Ground

Railways play their home matches at the Red Dust Holdings Recreation Ground (formerly simply known as the Recreation Ground, or "the Rec") on Francis Street in Beachlands, Geraldton. The ground was renamed in April 2024 as part of a three-year sponsorship agreement with local company Red Dust Holdings. The Rec has been the home of Railways football for generations and sits in the western part of the city, close to the Indian Ocean coastline. The venue also includes the Railway Football Club Functions facility, which is used for events and community gatherings throughout the year.

Community and Programs

Railways Football Club supports a strong junior pathway through the Railways Junior Football Club, which fields teams from Under 8s through to Youth Girls and Under 16s. The senior club maintains close ties with the junior pathway, providing a clear development route for young players in the Geraldton region. The club also runs a popular bingo night and social functions at the Rec, reinforcing its role as a community hub well beyond the football season. Railways have a history of engaging local businesses and sponsors, with an annual Sponsors Day reflecting the club's deep ties to the Geraldton commercial community.

Geraldton and the Midwest

Geraldton - officially known as the City of Greater Geraldton - is Western Australia's largest regional city outside the Pilbara, located approximately 424 kilometres north of Perth on the Batavia Coast. With a population of around 40,000, the city is the commercial and service hub of the Mid West region. The Beachlands precinct, where the Rec Ground sits, is a western suburb of the city that enjoys proximity to the Indian Ocean and Champion Bay. Geraldton has a rich football tradition stretching back to the early 1900s, and Railways are central to that story.

The Blues compete in the Great Northern Football League and call the Red Dust Holdings Recreation Ground, Beachlands, home. Follow them on Facebook and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.

    📄 Material & Construction

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
