Sherwood Maggies Banners - QAFL Pride Since 1956
The Sherwood Magpies AFC has been a powerhouse of Brisbane and Queensland football since 1956, and FootyBanners.com is proud to help the Maggies celebrate every milestone with a fully custom banner that reflects that incredible legacy.
Simple to Order
Choose from Single Player, Two Player, Team, or Grand Final banner options and provide the player's name, surname, guernsey number, and milestone (for example, Tom Kelso, #12, 150 Games). Banners use permanent inks on heavy-duty paper built to handle a sweltering Queensland afternoon at Powenyenna Oval in Chelmer.
Two Players, One Banner
When two Maggies players share a milestone on the same day, our Two Player banner celebrates them both in one great design. Provide both players' names and guernsey numbers and we'll take care of the design from there.
Team Banners for Group Celebrations
Celebrating 3 to 6 players at once? Our Team Banner option covers everyone in one powerful design. Set a rallying top-line message like "Fly Maggies Fly!" and give your squad a run-through that the whole club will remember.
Wall Keepsake Banners
Our Wall Keepsake Banners are available in Small, Medium, and Large, produced on thick recyclable paper with waterproof inks. A brilliant addition to the Maggies clubrooms at Powenyenna Oval or a home display celebrating a great career at Sherwood.
Grand Final Banners
When the Maggies are playing for the QAFL flag, go all out with a Grand Final banner in 4.5m or 5.5m. Top and bottom text is fully customised for Sherwood Magpies AFC. Contact us early for design and wording support.
About Sherwood Magpies Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Sherwood Magpies Australian Football Club traces its origins to 1956, when the Sherwood Junior Australian Football Club was established in Brisbane's western suburbs. As the junior club grew in size, a senior side - the Sherwood Australian Football Club - was formed to provide a direct pathway for players into the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL). The Sherwood AFC played out of Chelmer Oval, 41 Chelmer Street, Chelmer, and adopted the black and white emblem of the magpie. After winning eight consecutive first-division flags, the club earned promotion into the QAFL in 1983. A parallel club, the Western Districts AFC - itself descended from the Taringa Football Club, which first competed in the Queensland Football League in 1920 - provided further football history in the western suburbs before merging with Sherwood AFC in 1991 to form the West Brisbane Australian Football Club.
Club History
The West Brisbane AFC won the 1996 QAFL premiership, defeating Mt Gravatt by 17.10 (112) to 8.10 (58) in the grand final, with Corey Lambert claiming that year's Grogan Medal. Financial difficulties forced the club out of competition after 1997, and it reformed in 1999 as the Western Magpies, re-entering the state league in 2001. After being placed into Division Two in 2004, the club won back-to-back Division Two premierships in 2006 and 2008 and returned to QAFL Division One in 2009. The club now competes in the top tier of the Queensland Australian Football League as the Sherwood Magpies. Notable alumni from the club's predecessor clubs include Gavin Crosisca (246 games for Collingwood), Ray Smith (77 games for Essendon and 27 for Melbourne), Craig Potter (42 games for Sydney Swans and 13 for Brisbane Bears), and Gary Shaw (Collingwood and the Brisbane Bears).
Home Ground
The Magpies play out of Powenyenna Oval at 41 Chelmer Street East, Chelmer. The name Powenyenna comes from the Yeerongpan people's language, meaning "home of the magpie." The ground has been the home of western suburbs football since the Western Districts AFC relocated there from Oakman Park, Toowong in 1971. The facilities are shared with the Sherwood Junior Australian Football Club and the Kenmore Australian Football Club, making Chelmer a central hub for Australian rules football across Brisbane's western suburbs.
Community and Programs
The Sherwood Magpies field teams across the QAFL senior, reserves, under-18 and women's competitions. The club has a proud history of senior women's football dating back to 1970, when the women's team played Western Districts in an annual clash. The club works closely with more than a dozen junior clubs across Brisbane's western suburbs, including Collingwood Park, Ferny Grove, Forest Lake, Kenmore, Jindalee, Moorooka, Sherwood, and Yeronga, providing a clear pathway to state-level football. The club's Auskick and youth programs introduce Australian rules football to children throughout the area.
Chelmer
Chelmer is a residential suburb located 9.8 kilometres south-west of the Brisbane CBD, nestled in a bend of the Brisbane River in the City of Brisbane. The suburb recorded a population of 3,325 in the 2021 census. It is known for its heritage-listed Queenslander homes, the camphor laurel-lined Laurel Avenue - voted Brisbane's Best Street in 1999 - and its leafy, riverside character. Chelmer railway station connects the suburb directly to the Brisbane CBD via the Ipswich Line. The suburb suffered significant flood damage during the 2011 Queensland floods.
The Magpies compete in the QAFL and call Powenyenna Oval, Chelmer home. Visit the club website for more information, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
