About South Gawler Football Club

Origins and Founding

The South Gawler Football Club (SGFC), nicknamed the Lions, was founded in 1889 by James Fitzgerald in the Gawler South area of the town of Gawler, South Australia. The club is one of the oldest and most successful in South Australian country football, competing continuously for over 135 years. South Gawler competes in the Gawler and Barossa Football League, which brings together clubs from the Gawler, Barossa Valley, and Light regions north of Adelaide.

Club History

South Gawler has amassed 39 A-grade senior premierships since its founding in 1889, making it the club with the most senior premierships in South Australian country football and the third-most of any Australian rules club in South Australia overall. The Lions have been multiple-time premiers in junior competitions as well, with their Colt-age premiership victories adding to an already exceptional honour board. The club has produced numerous players who have gone on to compete at SANFL level, reinforcing South Gawler's reputation as one of the premier football nurseries in the Gawler and Barossa region.

Home Ground

The Lions play their home games at Eldred Riggs Reserve in Evanston, located in the Gawler township area of South Australia. The reserve has served as the club's home base and hosts both senior men's and women's football as well as netball and social functions. The club's administrative address is PO Box 240, Gawler SA 5118.

Community and Programs

South Gawler FC operates a comprehensive community program, fielding senior men's and women's teams, reserves, and junior sides across age groups including Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, and girls' competitions. The club's Auskick program caters for children aged 5 to 12. In July 2021, South Gawler and Willaston Football Club jointly celebrated NAIDOC Week by honouring the great contribution of their Indigenous players, reflecting the club's commitment to inclusion and community recognition. The Lions also maintain an active past-players and supporters network.

Evanston and Gawler

Evanston is a suburb within the Gawler township, located approximately 36 kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD. Gawler itself, the regional centre, is situated 42 kilometres north of Adelaide at the edge of the greater metropolitan area and had a population of 28,562 at the 2021 census. Gawler is one of South Australia's oldest towns, with strong historical ties to pastoralism, agriculture, and early European settlement dating to the 1830s.

The Lions compete in the Gawler and Barossa Football League and call Eldred Riggs Reserve, Evanston home. Follow the club on Facebook for news and fixture updates.

  • Footy Banner Information

Material:  All Footy Banners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet.  They are fully recyclable.

How to Use:  We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it.  If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through.  There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.

On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon!  This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.

Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.

Pro Tip:  Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
