About South Gawler Lionesses

Origins and Founding

The South Gawler Lionesses are the women's Australian rules football team of the South Gawler Football Club, one of the most storied clubs in South Australia. The parent club was founded on 21 March 1889 by James Fitzgerald at a meeting held at the Mill Inn in Gawler South - making it one of the oldest continuously operating football clubs in the state. Women's football came to the club in 2017 when the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association launched a women's competition, and the South Gawler Football Club responded by creating the Lionesses. The team entered its first senior season in 2018.

Club History

The Lionesses emerged from humble beginnings but quickly began producing talented players. In the inaugural 2018 season, Tegan Nottle was selected on the wing for the South Australian Country representative side. In 2022, Captain-Coach Aisha Thomas won the BLGW Trophy - the Association's best and fairest award - becoming the first Lioness to claim that honour. In 2023, the under-16 Girls team claimed the club's first BLGW premiership at any level, achieving the milestone within just five years of the women's program commencing. The parent club, the South Gawler Lions, holds 39 A-grade premierships - the third-most in South Australia - including titles in the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association in 1990, 1992, 1993, 2021 and 2023.

Home Ground

The Lionesses play home games at Eldred Riggs Reserve in Evanston, Gawler. The ground has been the home of the South Gawler Football Club for many years and sits in the heart of the Gawler community in South Australia's Barossa region. The reserve provides playing fields and club facilities for both the senior men's, women's, and junior programs of the club.

Community and Programs

The South Gawler Football Club runs a comprehensive football program across men's senior and reserve grades, women's senior and youth teams, and an extensive junior program. The Lionesses program provides a direct pathway for girls and women from the junior ranks into senior football. The club is deeply embedded in the Gawler community, having operated continuously since 1889. Notable alumni of the men's program include AFL footballer Sam Butler, who joined the West Coast Eagles in 2004 and was a member of their 2006 AFL Premiership team, and Yves Sibenaler Jr, who won seven SANFL premierships with Central District between 2003 and 2010.

Gawler

Gawler is a town in South Australia, located approximately 43 kilometres north of Adelaide at the confluence of the North and South Para Rivers. It is one of the oldest towns in South Australia, proclaimed in 1839. The Gawler area serves as a regional hub for the Barossa Light region and has a population of over 27,000 people. The Evanston area, where Eldred Riggs Reserve is located, is part of greater Gawler and is one of the town's southern growth precincts.

The Lionesses compete in the Barossa Light & Gawler Football Association and call Eldred Riggs Reserve home. More information is available at southgawlerfc.com, and the club can be followed on Facebook and Instagram.

    📄 Material & Construction

    • Premium Coated Paper (1.6 m high) printed with permanent, waterproof inks—won’t run or fade, even in wet weather.

    • Eco-friendly & Recyclable: All banners are fully recyclable when the celebration is over.

    • Durable weatherproof sports banners printed on heavy-duty coated paper - these banners are not made of crepe paper.

    🔧 Preparation & Run-Through Setup - Expert instructions for break-through milestone banners.

    • Rigging Your Banner

      • Tape broomsticks or PVC pipe to each edge to keep the banner taut.

      • This creates a professional “run-through” presentation for game-day moments.

    • Creating the Break-Through Slits

      • Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.

      • Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.

    💡 Tips & Tricks

    • Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.

    • Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.

  • Return and Refund Policy

As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.

Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
