About South Warrnambool Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The South Warrnambool Football Netball Club, known as the Roosters, was founded in 1902 and first played competitive football in the Warrnambool District Football Association in 1904. The club was coached by legendary VFL figure Roy Cazaly in 1919 and 1920, who identified and promoted local talent Colin Watson to St. Kilda. In 1918, South Warrnambool merged with Railways FC to win the Warrnambool DFA premiership. When the Western District Football Association absorbed the Warrnambool competition in 1924, South Warrnambool merged with Warrnambool City to form the Warrnambool FC. Three years later, in 1927, South Warrnambool reformed as an independent club to restore local competition.
Club History
South Warrnambool joined the Hampden Football League in 1933 and quickly became one of the competition's most decorated clubs. The Roosters have claimed 13 senior premierships: 1940, 1954, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1996, 2006, 2011, 2023, and 2024, with back-to-back flags in 2023 and 2024 among the most recent. The 1990s were a particularly dominant decade, producing four flags in seven seasons. The Roosters have also produced an exceptional number of VFL/AFL players, including Jonathan Brown (Brisbane Lions, 2000), Hugh McCluggage (Brisbane Lions, 2017), Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Western Bulldogs, 2021), Wayne Schwass (North Melbourne, 1988), and Leon Cameron (Western Bulldogs, 1990), making South Warrnambool one of regional Victoria's leading football nurseries.
Home Ground
The Roosters play at Friendly Societies Park in Warrnambool, a ground the club has used since joining the Hampden Football League in 1933. The venue is commonly referred to as the club's "fortress" and sits within the heart of the Warrnambool sporting precinct. The club's earlier history saw them contest matches at the local showgrounds before the move to Friendly Societies Park became permanent.
Community and Programs
South Warrnambool fields senior football and netball teams, with netball operating as an integral part of the club's identity under the joint banner of the South Warrnambool Football Netball Club. Junior development pipelines across the Warrnambool region have historically fed talent into the senior program. The club also maintains a strong reserves program, with 20 Hampden FNL reserve premierships on its honour board. Community events, club dinners, and end-of-season functions bring together players, families, and supporters throughout the Warrnambool area each season.
Warrnambool
Warrnambool is a major regional city located on the south-west coast of Victoria, approximately 263 kilometres south-west of Melbourne. The city has a population of around 35,400 people (2021 census) and serves as the commercial and service hub for the Moyne and Corangamite shires. Known for its whale-watching at Logan's Beach, the Warrnambool Art Gallery, and the annual May Racing Carnival, the city blends coastal lifestyle with strong agricultural roots in the surrounding dairy and beef country.
The Roosters compete in the Hampden Football Netball League and call Friendly Societies Park home. For more information, visit the club's Facebook page or follow them on Instagram.

-
-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
