About St Marys Football Club
Origins and Founding
St Marys Football Club, known as the Saints or "The Green Machine," was founded in 1952 and is affiliated with the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL). Based in Marrara - a northern suburb of Darwin - the Saints are widely regarded as the most successful club in Northern Territory football history. The club's motto, "Recte Ad Metam" (Straight to the Goal), reflects a culture of excellence that has defined St Marys for more than seven decades.
Club History
St Marys holds an extraordinary 34 NTFL premierships from 53 Grand Final appearances. Flags include 1954/55, 1955/56, 1958/59, 1959/60, 1961/62, and seven consecutive premierships from 1983/84 to 1991/92, followed by five more from 1993/94 to 1996/97 and a run of three from 2007/08 to 2009/10. The 2021/22 and 2023/24 flags are among the most recent. Of the 72 possible finals series between their founding and 2025, St Marys have appeared in 69 of them. The club has produced some of the most celebrated Indigenous Australian footballers in AFL history, including Maurice Rioli (Richmond), Michael Long (Essendon), Peter Burgoyne (Port Adelaide), Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn), Daniel Rioli (Richmond), and Maurice Rioli Jr (Richmond). Many Tiwi Bombers players have also played for the Saints.
Home Ground
The Saints play their home games at TIO Stadium (also known as Football Park) in Marrara. The ground has a capacity of 14,000 and is the premier Australian rules football venue in the Northern Territory. It has hosted NTFL grand finals, State of Origin fixtures, and pre-season AFL matches, and is the spiritual home of Top End football.
Community and Programs
St Marys has long been a gateway club for Indigenous talent from Marrara, the Darwin suburbs, and the Tiwi Islands. The club plays a central role in the Northern Territory football community and has been a pipeline to AFL football for generations of young Indigenous Australians. The club fields senior men's, women's, and junior teams, and the NTFL Women's competition has seen St Marys win multiple premierships at that level as well.
Marrara
Marrara is a northern residential and industrial suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, located approximately 10-12 kilometres from the Darwin CBD. With a population of around 1,549, it is a small but strategically located suburb near Darwin Airport and the major sporting and entertainment precinct that includes TIO Stadium, the Marrara Cricket Ground, and the Marrara Indoor Stadium. Darwin itself is Australia's northernmost capital city and gateway to the Top End.
The Saints compete in the Northern Territory Football League and call TIO Stadium, Marrara home. Visit the club website, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and match-day updates.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
