About Sunbury Kangaroos Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Sunbury Kangaroos Football Club was founded in 1987 under the name Sunbury Rovers, established to give the town of Sunbury a second senior team in the Riddell District Football League (RDFL). For much of the club's early years, the Rovers competed as the second club in town behind the more established Sunbury Lions. When the Lions departed for the Ballarat Football League, the Kangaroos had their opportunity to grow, and the club subsequently rebranded as the Kangaroos after receiving incentives from the North Melbourne Football Club to align with the Kangaroos identity. According to the club's Wikipedia page, this rebranding helped cement a new identity for the club as it built its reputation in the RDFL.
Club History
Competing in the RDFL from 1987 to 2018, the Kangaroos won the RDFL Seniors premiership in 2012 and five RDFL Reserves premierships in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, and 2017. In 2018, the women's and girls' teams joined the Essendon District Football League (EDFL), and from the 2019 season all senior men's, women's, and junior teams transferred to the EDFL. The move paid immediate dividends - the Kangaroos won both the EDFL Division 2 Seniors and Reserves premierships in their very first EDFL season in 2019, as noted in the EDFL premiership records. The club competes in EDFL Division 2 in both the Men's and Women's competitions.
Home Ground
The Kangaroos play their home games at Eric Boardman Memorial Reserve on Mitchells Lane in Sunbury. The reserve is a dedicated community sporting facility in the heart of Sunbury and serves as the base for all Kangaroos home matches across senior men's, women's, and junior grades. The club also fields teams in the Vic Country Masters competition at the Over 35s and Over 45s levels, which are played on a fortnightly schedule of approximately ten games per season.
Community and Programs
Sunbury Kangaroos Football and Netball Club offers football pathways for men, women, and juniors of all ages, alongside a thriving netball program. The affiliated Sunbury Kangaroos Junior Football Club provides an entry point to the game for young players in the Sunbury area, with junior boys' and girls' teams competing across multiple age groups. The club is affiliated with the City of Hume council region and is an active member of the local community sporting network.
Sunbury, Victoria
Sunbury is a regional town in Victoria's City of Hume local government area, located approximately 40 kilometres north-west of Melbourne's CBD. With a population of around 50,000 and growing as part of Melbourne's outer growth corridor, Sunbury has a strong sense of community identity built around local sport, schools, and the natural landscape of the Macedon Ranges surrounds. The town has two Australian rules football clubs - the Sunbury Lions and the Sunbury Kangaroos - giving residents a vibrant football culture throughout the season.
The Kangaroos compete in the Essendon District Football League and call Eric Boardman Memorial Reserve, Sunbury VIC home. Follow them on Facebook and follow them on Instagram for match day news and club updates.

-
-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
