About Sunbury Lions Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Sunbury Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Lions, was founded in 1879 and is one of the oldest Australian rules football clubs in Victoria. The club began as the Sunbury Lions and played its first recorded match against Northcote Football Club in 1880. The Lions were founding members of the Riddell District Football League in 1912 and competed in that competition for over eight decades before making a significant move in 1997 to join the Ballarat Football League (BFL), seeking a stronger standard of competition better suited to the club's ambitions. The junior division of the Sunbury Football Club was founded separately in 1974 and is one of the longest-standing junior clubs in the Riddell District Football Netball League.
Club History
The Sunbury Lions joined the Ballarat Football League in 1997 and quickly established themselves as a powerhouse, winning four consecutive BFL premierships from 1997 to 1999 and again in 2004, and adding a further flag in 2012. The senior club's success in the BFL reflected the quality of football developed at Sunbury over more than a century of competition. The Lions serve the Hume City local government area, which encompasses the suburban fringe north of Melbourne. The junior program has developed numerous players who have gone on to senior representative football, and the club maintains active football and netball programs across all age groups.
Home Ground
The Sunbury Lions play their home games at Clarke Oval in Sunbury, a ground that has hosted Lions football for many years. Clarke Oval is located within the Sunbury township and provides facilities for both the senior football and netball competitions. The ground is central to the Lions' identity as a community club and serves as the training and match day venue for senior, reserves and youth teams. The oval is maintained by Hume City Council and has been progressively upgraded to meet the needs of a growing club population.
Community and Programs
Sunbury Football Netball Club fields senior men's, senior women's (BFNL), and junior football teams, alongside a competitive netball program. The Lions have embraced women's football as a key pillar of the club, with both a men's and women's team competing in the Ballarat Football Netball League. The junior program, which traces its roots back to 1974, continues to provide football pathways for young players from Sunbury and the surrounding communities of Bulla, Gisborne and the Macedon Ranges. The club is known for its active community engagement and strong family culture.
Sunbury
Sunbury is a major town in the City of Hume local government area, located approximately 40 kilometres north-west of Melbourne's CBD. The town had a population exceeding 45,000 at the 2021 Census and is one of the largest regional centres on Melbourne's outer fringe. Sunbury is served by the Sunbury line on Melbourne's metropolitan train network, with trains running directly to Flinders Street Station. The town is known for its historic bluestone buildings, the Sunbury Wine Region and its strong community sporting culture, making the Lions a central part of local identity.
The Lions compete in the Ballarat Football League and call Clarke Oval home. Visit the club website, follow them on Facebook, and follow them on Instagram for news and match day updates.
Footy Banner Information
Material: All Milestone Banners made by Footybanners are printed on 1.6 Metre high coated paper using permanent inks which will not run, even if they get wet. They are fully recyclable.
How to Use: We recommend taping broomsticks or plastic pipe to the ends of the banner to hold it flat whilst the player runs through it. If you cut vertical slits in the banner in the centre, it creates a weak spot where it will break and look best when run through. There are instructions and images for how to cut these in the FAQ section below.
On a windy day, cut smaller vertical slits in the Footy Banner so if the wind catches it, it doesn't rip too soon! This is why we do not pre-cut them, and also so you can get photographs with your intact banner when it looks at it's best.
Tip: Some players choose to only cut one weak spot in their banner so it can be saved and displayed later by taping it back together on the back.Pro Tip: Cut the weak spot to one side of the mascot or team logo so it stays intact as well!
Return and Refund Policy
As each banner is custom made, once ordered, we cannot return them.
Please check the details you submit for printing carefully, as we will make the banner using the exact spelling and information you provide.
