About Suns Football Netball Club
Origins and Founding
The Suns Football Netball Club is a community Australian rules football and netball club based in the western Melbourne suburb of Tarneit, in the City of Wyndham. The club was formed in 2014 in response to rapid residential growth in the Tarneit area, and first fielded a senior men's side in the 2015 Western Football Netball League (WFNL) season. In that debut season the Suns immediately made an impression, finishing fourth and qualifying for finals, defeating Point Cook Centrals in their first-ever final before being eliminated by Albanvale. The club's establishment reflects Wyndham's position as one of Australia's fastest-growing local government areas.
Club History
The Suns have built a competitive record in the WFNL since entering the competition. The club reached the Division 3 grand final in 2018 but lost to Point Cook Centrals by 25 points. After rebuilding, the club returned to the grand final in 2022, losing narrowly to Braybrook by just 2 points. The 2023 season proved to be the breakthrough year: the Suns defeated Albanvale by 2 points in the senior grand final to claim the club's first-ever senior premiership, with the reserves side also defeating Albanvale on the same day to record their second reserves premiership (following their first in 2015). The senior women's side debuted in 2024, immediately making finals in their first season. The club also fields three netball teams across WFNL netball competition divisions 3, 4 and 7.
Home Ground
The Suns play their home games at Goddard Street Reserve, Goddard Street, Tarneit 3029. The reserve is the club's hub for all football and netball activities, hosting seniors, reserves, women's and junior teams throughout the season. The ground sits within one of Melbourne's most rapidly expanding residential communities, and the club has grown alongside Tarneit's population boom since its 2014 formation.
Community and Programs
The Suns cater to all ages, fielding senior men's, senior women's and multiple junior football sides, plus netball teams across three WFNL divisions. The club runs AusKick programs for young children, providing entry-level football pathways for the thousands of families settling in Tarneit's new estates. The Suns maintain an active online presence with over 2,400 Facebook followers and are deeply embedded in the Tarneit community, providing sport and social connection in one of Australia's newest suburbs.
Tarneit, City of Wyndham
Tarneit is a suburb in Melbourne's west, located approximately 25 kilometres from the CBD within the City of Wyndham. It recorded a population of 56,370 at the 2021 census and is projected to exceed 131,000 residents by 2041, making it one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Australia. Tarneit is characterised by modern housing estates and family-friendly amenities, and as a new suburb it has an exceptionally young population. The City of Wyndham as a whole has been one of Australia's fastest-growing local government areas for over a decade.
The Suns compete in the Western Football Netball League and call Goddard Street Reserve, Tarneit home. Follow them on Facebook for news and match day updates.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
