About Willaston Donnybrooks
Origins and Founding
The Willaston Football Club, known as the Donnybrooks, was founded in 1889 by workers from the Willaston clay pits located along the North Para River. This industrial working-class origin remains a point of great pride for the club, which from its earliest days was known for a tough and resilient playing style. Willaston was a foundation member of what would become the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association (BLGFA), competing in the Gawler region of South Australia ever since. The name "Donnybrooks" is believed to reflect the club's feisty playing reputation from its early years.
Club History
Willaston has amassed one of the most impressive records of any club in the BLGFA, winning 23 Senior A-Grade premierships. Their championship years include 1889 (the inaugural season), 1896, 1897, 1903, 1915, 1928, 1930, 1933, 1935, 1937, 1939, 1941, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1961, 1972, 1978, 1980, 1985, 1988, 1999, and 2024. The 2024 flag was particularly celebrated, ending a 25-year wait for senior honours. AFL legend Andrew Jarman coached the club in the early 2020s, helping revitalise the senior program. In 2023 Caitlin Wendland became the first Willaston player to represent the club at AFLW level, a milestone for women's football in the region.
Home Ground
The Donnybrooks have played at Elliot Goodger Memorial Park since 1964, when the club relocated from an earlier ground described at the time as a "cow paddock". Elliot Goodger Memorial Park has since been developed into one of the premier sporting facilities in the Gawler region, with facilities shared across the football, netball, and cricket clubs that make up the Willaston Sporting Club complex.
Community and Programs
The Willaston Sporting Club serves as an umbrella body for football, netball, and cricket clubs operating under the Donnybrooks banner. The football club fields teams across senior, junior, and women's grades, reflecting the breadth of community participation in the sport in Willaston. The club also hosts a Country Music Club, a bingo night, a supporters club, and community hall hire at Elliot Goodger Memorial Park, making it a genuine multi-purpose community hub for the north Gawler area.
Willaston
Willaston is a suburb of Gawler in South Australia, located approximately 44 kilometres north of Adelaide. Gawler is one of South Australia's oldest provincial towns, established in 1839, and Willaston forms part of its greater township. The area sits at the northern edge of the Adelaide metropolitan region and is known for its heritage buildings, the North Para River, and its strong community sporting culture. Willaston has grown steadily as part of the broader Gawler district in recent decades.
The Willaston Donnybrooks compete in the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association and call Elliot Goodger Memorial Park home. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
