About Woonona Shamrocks Rugby Union Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Woonona Shamrocks Rugby Union Football Club was formed in 1970 through the amalgamation of two northern Wollongong clubs: Shamrocks RUFC and Woonona Surf RUFC. Shamrocks RUFC had been founded in 1966 by the Corrimal Young Christian Workers (YCW), initially known as the Aurora Club, and entered the Illawarra district competition in 1966 - winning the pre-season knock-out and reaching the C Grade grand final in their first year. In 1967, in only their second season, the Shamrocks won the knock-out, minor premiership, and grand final. Woonona Surf RUFC was founded in 1968 by members of the Woonona Surf Club who wanted to stay together during winter, winning the C Grade premiership in their debut year. The two clubs amalgamated in 1970 to form a single northern suburbs representative club for the Illawarra District Rugby Union, based at their spiritual home, Hoopers Royal Hotel in Woonona.
Club History
The Woonona Shamrocks compete in the Illawarra District Rugby Union competition and are the only rugby club in the northern suburbs of Wollongong. Despite a tough first season in 1970 - which produced the rare distinction of finishing last in all three grades - the club developed an ethos of toughness and competitive spirit that became its trademark. By 1978, the club had progressed significantly, reaching all three grand finals in that season and winning the A Grade premiership 4-0 against Vikings in a wet and blustery final. That year also saw former Wallaby Barry Stumbles join as player-coach, bringing renewed enthusiasm and fitness standards to the club. The Shamrocks celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2019, marking more than five decades as a community sporting institution in the northern Wollongong area.
Home Ground
The club plays at Ocean Park in Woonona, which has served as the Shamrocks' home ground for many years. The club originally used Nicolson Park in front of the Woonona Surf Club before settling at its current location. Ocean Park provides the base for the club's senior and junior competitions and is located in the coastal strip north of Wollongong, close to the beach environment that has always been central to the club's culture.
Community and Programs
The Woonona Shamrocks field teams in the Illawarra District Rugby Union Competition, with several junior sides from under-7s through to under-17s, as well as three senior grade sides. The club serves as a pathway for players to be selected in Illawarra Rugby and NSW Country representative teams. With a membership and supporter base of more than 600 people, the Shamrocks maintain a strong community connection. The club also holds a rich social tradition, with its club song adapted from a military march and the annual tours and post-match culture remaining as vibrant as ever.
Woonona
Woonona is a beachside suburb in the northern part of Wollongong, New South Wales, located approximately 70 kilometres south of Sydney. The suburb borders the Tasman Sea to the east and is characterised by its residential beach culture and proximity to the Illawarra escarpment. It forms part of the broader Wollongong local government area, a region with a long tradition of rugby union, rugby league and other community sports. The northern Wollongong corridor - encompassing suburbs such as Woonona, Bellambi, Corrimal and Bulli - has historically been a stronghold of working-class community sport.
The Shamrocks compete in the Illawarra District Rugby Union and call Ocean Park, Woonona home. Visit the club at shamrocksrugby.com.au and follow on Facebook.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
