About Wy Yung Tigers Junior Football
Origins and Founding
The Wy Yung Football Netball Club - known as the Tigers - runs a comprehensive junior football program as part of its broader community club, which has been based in Wy Yung, 5 kilometres west of Bairnsdale, since around 1920. The junior program developed alongside the senior club, which joined the East Gippsland Football League (EGFL) as a founding member in 1974. The name "Wy Yung" means "wild duck" in the local Indigenous language, reflecting the township's connection to the surrounding wetlands and Mitchell River floodplains.
Club History
The Wy Yung FNC's junior section competes in the East Gippsland Junior Football League (EGJFL) and has produced premiership success at multiple age levels, including Under 13s and Under 15s titles. The junior club fields Under 10s, Under 12s, and Under 14s teams in football, giving players across the Wy Yung and Bairnsdale district a clear pathway into senior football. The Tigers' senior club has won six EGFL premierships (1992, 2005, 2008, 2015, 2023, and 2025), and the junior program plays a key role in maintaining this success by developing players for the senior grade. The club holds Level 3 Good Sports Accreditation, reflecting its commitment to a safe and inclusive environment for players of all ages.
Home Ground
The junior Tigers train and play at Bullumwaal Road Recreation Reserve in Wy Yung, sharing facilities with the senior football and netball sides. The ground sits near the Mitchell River floodplains and provides a community-focused venue for junior sport in the East Gippsland region. Junior matches are typically played on Sundays through the EGJFL competition season.
Community and Programs
The Wy Yung FNC junior program is an integral part of the broader club, which also fields senior football, senior netball, and youth netball teams under the one banner. The junior program connects closely with the Auskick program at the entry level, giving children as young as five years old their first exposure to Australian rules football. The club actively promotes family participation and has been recognised for its community health and wellbeing approach through its Good Sports Accreditation status. The EGJFL competition allows junior Tigers to compete against other local clubs across the East Gippsland region, building local rivalries and football culture.

-
Creating the Break-Through Slits
-
Vertical Slits: Cut small slits (20–30 cm long) in the centre—this engineered weak spot ensures a clean break when players burst through.
-
Wind-Proof Technique: On windy or rainy days, make multiple smaller slits so the banner doesn’t tear prematurely.
-
💡 Tips & Tricks
-
Single Weak Spot: Some players cut only one slit to save and display the torn banner—repair later with clear tape on the reverse.
-
Logo Preservation: Position your slit to one side of the mascot or logo so your club’s emblem stays intact and can be retained afterwards for display.
