About Ainslie Football Club
Origins and Founding
The Ainslie Football Club was founded in 1927, making it one of the oldest continuously operating football clubs in the Australian Capital Territory. The club played its first premiership season in 1929, winning the flag in just its third year of existence, and has been a fixture of Canberra football ever since. Nicknamed the Tricolours, the club is based in the north Canberra suburb of Ainslie - a heritage-rich neighbourhood that has been home to the club for nearly a century. Club History
With 28 men's premierships and one women's premiership to their name, the Tricolours are the most successful club in AFL Canberra history. Their premiership years are 1929, 1936, 1946, 1947, 1952, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1970, 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The most dominant era in the club's history was the six-consecutive-premiership run from 1992 to 1997. The club also competed in the national North East Australian Football League from 2011 to 2015, winning the Eastern Conference title in 2011. Long-serving coach Chris Rourke guided the Tricolours to six premierships across his 14-year tenure from 2007 to 2020. Record games holder Todd Pulford played 236 games for the men's side, matched by Dani Curcio's 236-game record on the women's side. The club fields teams across nine senior competitions and 13 junior age groups.


Home Ground
The Tricolours play at Alan Ray Oval, located within Corroboree Park in the suburb of Ainslie. The oval underwent a major resurfacing project that was completed in time for the 2026 season, with the newly renovated ground officially reopening in April 2026. Corroboree Park is one of Canberra's most historically significant open spaces, with roots going back to the city's earliest years of settlement in the 1920s.


Community and Programs
Ainslie fields teams at every available grade in both senior and junior football, including 13 junior age groups and a growing women's program. The club runs Auskick programs for younger children and places strong emphasis on fun, participation, sportsmanship, skill development, and community involvement. The club has produced a remarkable number of VFL, AFL, and AFLW players over its near-century of operation, including Nathan Buckley (Brisbane Bears and Collingwood), James Hird (Essendon), David Cloke (Richmond and Collingwood), Aaron vandenBerg (Melbourne), Jason Tutt (Western Bulldogs and Carlton), and AFLW representatives Ashleigh Brazil (Collingwood), Tess Cattle and Georgia Clayden (both Gold Coast Suns).


Ainslie
The suburb of Ainslie sits in the North Canberra district, approximately 3 kilometres north-north-east of the Canberra CBD. With a population of 5,376 at the 2021 Census, it is a leafy, heritage-listed neighbourhood characterised by early-twentieth-century cottages, mature deciduous street trees, and parklands. The suburb borders Mount Ainslie to the east, whose nature reserve trails are a daily feature of life for residents. Ainslie has three housing precincts listed on the ACT Heritage Register, all built between 1925 and 1929 - the same era the football club was founded.
